With kids coming to the computer at younger and younger ages, little hands need a smaller mouse to maneuver the PC. Those little hands also carry lots of germs.
The occasional disinfectant wipe or cleaning spray on a paper towel can clean most germs off of a mouse, but Belkin has come out with a washable mouse that can be submerged under water and cleaned with mild soap. That should do it.
I saw the mouse floating in a bowl of water next to a rubber ducky at a trade show, and it even continued to work under water. This is not a must-have for families, but the $29.99 mouse can provide some peace of mind if lots of little, germy hands are using the family computer throughout the week. Being able to give a mouse a good washing is one way to avoid the spread of some germs, at least.
The mouse can also (obviously) take a spill, but allowing drinks around small children and computers is not the smart way to go. The simple design and size of the mouse is nice for smaller hands.

why not an optical wireless model too, at a reasonable price. jimmy

Great idea. Kids have a tough time with the adult-sized mouses. And the sticky hands...
