'Tweens want cell phones, and sometimes their parents want them to have phones for safety and family communication reasons. But here's the thing parents and phone carriers are realizing: A phone that looks like a baby-kid phone and nothing like the ones older siblings carry will just get stuffed in the bottom of a backpack and forgotten.
Companies like kajeet and Disney have figured this out, offering a line of 'tween-approved phones with plenty of features and tools for managing usage. Now Firefly Mobile, which came out with one of the first phones for 'tweens—a squat-body phone with five buttons to program parents' and emergency numbers—has redesigned its first phone and will launch a new one to appeal to 'tweens' decidedly specific tastes on Oct. 10.
The new phone is the flyPhone ($125), and besides the ability to make calls on pay-as-you-go plans that cost about 10 cents a minute, it will have an MP3 player, a video player, camera, mobile games and, yes, texting. Kids will be able to customize ringtones, wallpapers, photos, and slideshows. The phone, aimed at the ages-8-to-12 set, comes with flyKicks software that allows kids to tinker and create their own ringtones, wallpapers, and add effects to photos and slideshows to share with friends.
The original Firefly phone has been recast into the glowPhone ($50). It still has a limited key pad, with "mom" and "dad" speed dialing buttons, and an emergency 911 key, though it can be programmed to hold up to 50 phone numbers. Designed for kids ages 5 to 8, the glowPhone also come with pre-loaded games, ringtones, wallpapers, and Firefly says it is easier to program and navigate.
They will be sold online on Firefly's web site, as well as by major retailers, including Target, Toys R Us, Kmart, and BarnesandNoble.com.
More details to come when I am able to get my hands (and my tween's) on both new Firefly phones.

uhmmm.... i'm atween i guess you would say and the comment posted above is ridiculous. tweens are not 5-8 year olds i'm around 13 and peeps call me a tween. kids like 5-8 year olds should be grateful they live in a world where they can reach their parents anywhere with the touch of a button. i would buy that phone if it wasnt so expensive. i am raising money for a trac phone. 20 dollars is all. so no making cell phones designed for kids my age is not a bad idea
Since we share a world with pedophiles kids who walk to and from school by themselves need cell phones, so that they can call their parents or 911 with the touch of a button. My 9 year old daughter and 12 year old son walk home together and i still worry. I will definitely be getting this phone for them.
i just love the idea of giving your child a cell phone.i really don't agree with the first comment. The thing thats good about it is you can only call mom,dad and 911 plus it's cool by the look but pretty high prices.
I bought the Firefly for my grandson as a Christmas present. After several phone calls to the company and e-mails for support, I still cannot get the phone to operate correctly. I cannot get into the voice mail to set it up for messages and the volume is so low you can barely hear anything. I am still waiting to hear from the support people. I will get an AT&T To Go Phone. I cannot recommend the Firefly.

What the heck. 5 to 8 year olds getting cell phones? This is extremly ridiculos. I mean, what 5 year old would be able to learn how to use a cell phone properly, never mind the fact that the parents are crazy enough to buy them another "Useless" gadget. Today's Kids are spoiled more than enough already. What are they going to make now, phones for 1 month old infants?
