Sony has come out with the newest version of its digital book reader, but there's no new price: It's still $300, though that is $50 less than when it first hit the market a little more than a year ago.
Sony brings a new button layout and improved navigational tools to the Sony Ready Digital Book, along with some new colors: silver and dark blue instead of black.
Also new is a thinner look, faster response time in moving from page to page, and better gray/white contrast on what already looked pretty true to a real book page.
Crave reports that Sony's timing is good since Amazon has been rumored to be coming out with an electronic book reader of its own.
I'm curious to see if the new tweaks to the Sony Reader will be enough to convert more readers to e-books. (I'm hoping to get my hands on one to test it out for you.) What's stopping you from making the plunge, or are you already a convert?
Sony is offering 100 free Classic book titles from its Connect download store to get readers going on the new version.

Currently I think the IRex Illiad is better, that's becuase it does a lot more PDF, Stylus.. etc (basically a hand held laptop). I really hope this version of Sony has a better PDF reader, that would make it worth getting for the price.

They should get these things into education, offer a deal for schools that are willing to convert. I would literally KILL to have all my textbooks in that one tiny little thing, I saw it in borders the other day (the old black one) and the contrast was not great, and the button layout was very anti-intuitive. With these two improvements made, their is really no reason why I would not switch to this, provided that there is a large selection of titles-including my textbooks. These things should really market for education, it would be an all around win, provided the price and convenience is right for the schools.
