Parents' Weekend To-Do: Play Video Games

Played your kids' video games lately?

No? You've probably checked the age rating on a video game before giving it the nod. But an Iowa State University psychologist told CNN that parents should play the video games their kids play to help them make good game choices.

That may not go over big in lots of houses. But Craig Anderson, co-author of the upcoming book, "Violent Video Game Effects on Children and Adolescents," is among researchers who believe there is a link between repeated violent video-game playing and aggression in kids.

For parents of young gamers, give the whole story a read. In the meantime, here are a few questions Anderson suggests parents ask when playing their kids' video games:

• Do people harm others, and do so frequently?

• Is the harm rewarded, or portrayed as funny?

• Are nonviolent solutions offered, and if so, are they less fun than the violent ones?

• Are realistic consequences of violence shown?

If two or more of the answers are yes, Anderson advises parents help their kids find other games to play.

There are lots of other games that don't have violence in them that are equally entertaining, and from a societal view, more healthy, Anderson says.

MLB The Show gets all the PS2 airtime in our house. I must admit I haven't played it, but I don't think the players are hitting each other over the head with bats. But you never know...

Pick up a controller this weekend. Think of it as some air-conditioned bonding time with your kids if it's still killer hot outside. No pun intended.

Playing videogames with your kids is a great way to bond. But the links between violent games and violence itself is very ify. For instance take the popular Grand Theft Auto series, its violent but extremely fun. I think you'd find that anyone that buys/plays that game isn't going to go out and steal a car, or go carjack someone. Its just entertainment. Most games support multiplayers and you should have a go. AND! don't let the fact that your kid is better at the game than you are put you off.

I think this is a very dumb and waste of money for research. There may be just as much a link in the violence of games and people, if people that like "rare" steaks to vampires. Sound crazy to you? People put too much stock in stuff like this. Japan is gaming meca of the world, and they have a very dosile, and low crime rate compared to USA, let alone, Europe. There may be less of a crime rate here, and fewer "trouble children" if parents actually were parents. And hung out with their children and were friends to their kids, instead of complainy underpaid babysitters. But who is actually responsable for the violence...... humm, I would look to the homes where the kids grow up at!!!! Because more than likley there is a "super" mom, that chose to to get rid of their father figure, or visa versa.. and it is a cry for attention!!!!!

This whole artical was a waste of time.Iam a big fan of a game called counter strike even if its a bloody game, iam not gonna go start killing people just because i saw it in a game.So play as many gory and bloody games as you want, no one cares just as long as you dont start trying it out in real life. Just remeber its only a game!
