On the lookout for fun tech toys, I came across this ropeless jump rope on Shiny Shiny (via Gizmodo). But I'm not sure it meets the fun requirement.
As my youngest daughter said as she read over my shoulder, Isn't the joy of jumping rope jumping over the rope?
Good question. The weighted balls on the ends of the JumpSnap simulate the spinning rope, and an LCD display tells you how many times you've jumped and how many calories you've burned while doing it. The two workout DVDs that come with the $60 set are a tipoff that the JumpSnap is all about working out and not necessarily kid fun. I guess the good thing is you won't ever trip over a rope while working out, but is that peace of mind worth $60? I'm not so sure.
If you're looking to actually jump over a rope while counting calories, Shiny Shiny also found this less-expensive Calorie-Counting Skipping Rope.
Rope or no rope, both are reminders to get moving!

Although pricey, it looks like a great way to get the excercise of jumping rope while in a cramped apartment or hotel room.

At first I thought "Oh great, it will keep me from tripping over the cheap, kinky rope on my jump rope that never quite swings the way it's supposed to!" But, for $60, I think I can buy one or two VERY SWANKY jump ropes that won't kink up, and will swing properly.
