Reader Question: "My question is concerning a digital camera. I am going on a Alaskan cruise and I have been advised to buy a camera that is/has moisture protection. What is your advice on which camera to buy. I think that I need one with a zoom lens. The reason I say this is because the glaciers are at a distance. And I would like a clear picture of them. Please advice".

I asked for a little help from Darren Rowse, founder of the Digital School of Photography to answer your question, and he suggested taking a look at the Olympus range of all-weather cameras. He says, "They are not waterproof as such but will resist a little moisture. I’ve not tested it, but the Olympus Stylus 710 has some reasonable reviews." The Olympus Stylus 710 is 7.1 megapixel CCD camera with a 3X optical Zoom, and a 2.5 inch LCD.

If you're really concerned about the elements, the Pentax Optio W10 is a waterproof/ dustproof digital camera that can actually be submerged for 30 minutes under water. It features up to 6-megapixels and a 3X zoom lens, and can go with you on any vacation.

Although, I doubt this one is weatherproof, I would also recommend the Kodak Easyshare V610 which has a dual-lens to take regular and panoramic pictures. It's not everyday you see glaciers, and this 6-megapixel camera has a 10X optical zoom lens, which is something not seen in many cameras this size. Here's a recent PCMag review of it.

So now, let's turn to our readers: What weather-proof cameras do you recommend? Please post your recommendations below.

Not sure how weather proof it really is, but I love my Kodak 6 magapixel Z760 camera. It has been threw and taken alot of outdoor abuse and use, since I got it last DEC.05 and now it is July06. I live in Illinois and the camera has taken great photos when its 0 degrees and up to 95 degrees. Almost everyday I have it with me because you just never know when a great picture moment is going to jump up in front of you. Plus you can take vidoes with it. It has alot of good auto (20) preset choiches and you can also set-up your own and save them. FANTASIC camera for ease of use and ability to handle abuse in my opinion. But while it can handle getting a little wet,(mine has anyway)I would not submerge it in water.

I am a diver, and take underwater photos.Although a bit expensive, digital cameras with housings are waterproof. You should be able to get an underwater camera,a 5 megipixil with housing for $600-$900.Contact a dive shop in your area for exact prices, you might get one cheaper, because I use an external strobe, which is more money. This kind of camera will take excellent above water photos, with or without housing, the housing just protects the camera.

i recommend just getting a canon or a kodak and use the yahoo search to help you find housing to protect your camera from the weather and stuff. i myself am actually getting a canon soon although im not sure which one im going to get but im going to buy housing for it because im really into photography and i want to be able to snap anything i can. GOOD LUCK!

I love digital photography and I also love Canon Cameras. I you purchase a Canon, you can also purchase an underwater housing to complement it. Canon is THE camera on the market and if you ask around you will never get a poor review from those in the know. Go to Canon's web site where they sell the camera housings. Almost every camera they make has a waterproof housing. Go Canon, you will never regret it! Good luck and have fun. I suggest you get a camera with a built-in zoom lens rather than interchangeable lens. Mine is a Fuji S9000 and I am happy with it. That way you don't let in dust or moisture when changing lenses and have a lens that zooms from wide angle to telephoto. Other than that, stick with well known brands like Nikon, Canon, Fuji or Sony. Study what they have on their web pages and make your own choice. Good luck.
