Nobody likes to clean, but then again, we don't have to when we have robots to take care of the dirty work for us. Five years ago, iRobot introduced the first consumer robot, which sold over 2 million units. It's been two years since we saw new Roombas, and judging from the list of new features, the redesign was worth the wait.

iRobot finally introduced an improved Roomba 500 series that's "stronger, quieter, smarter and will last five times longer than its predecessor" according to Gizmodo. Newer models in the series feature wireless technology, one-button activation, a re-designed dustbin to hold more debris, and a built-in voice tutorial for newbies. Sensors were also added to the front of the bumper to slow down the Roomba when it gets too close to objects, and anti-tangle technology keeps the vacuum from getting stuck on a rug's fringe. To add a splash of color, iRobot is also including faceplates in white, steel blue, champagne, burnt orange, silver, charcoal and chestnut.

Unfortunately, all models are not created equal, so in order to enjoy the cooler set of features, you need to pay extra for the top-of-the-line Roomba. The iRobot Roomba 560 is probably the most interesting of the three since it includes the new Virtual Wall Lighthouses, to guide the Roomba through the house and then back to its dock using radio frequency (RF) signals. These Virtual Wall Lighthouses also make sure each room has been completely vacuumed before allowing the Roomba to move to the next room. An on-board scheduling function lets users schedule automatic cleaning sessions even if they're not home.

The Roomba 560 is priced at $349, while the Roomba 530 with standard virtual walls and docking station sells for $299. Both will be available at select stores starting today.
