A Phone Without All The Bells And Whistles

Reader Norman has a question:" Does anyone know the slimmest/smallest phone, with no color, camera, mp3 etc - just a good phone/keypad?"

The MOTOFONE was the first phone that came to mind after reading your question.  It has yet to be released (slated to be released in the second half of 2006), but this phone is as thin and plain as they get. No color screen, no digital camera, or MP3 player to distract you from its real purpose. Motorola is known for creating the slimmest handsets in the market, and this one appears to be the thinnest yet. Yes, even thinner than the RAZR or the SLVR!

The MOTOFONE has large flush-fitting keypad buttons, and a powerful loud volume so you can hear your conversations even in a crowded street. It's target customers are those who have never had a mobile phone before, so the simple interface and voice activated commands also make it easy to operate.

If you can wait until its release, and don't mind being on a pre-paid plan, then maybe this phone is worth a good look.

Does anyone else have a good phone recommendation for Norman? Please post it below.

I say you get a phone with color, camera, and mp3, and it will still be the slimmest, and be a good phone/keyboard. THE RAZR!!! The razr is a great phone. Friends and family of mine are getting rid of there old phones to get the razr. Soon i will, too! I say totally go for the flip phone, dude!!! If it doesnt flip, dont waiste your money on it, it would just be a peice of junk. so i say get the razr, it will help you with all your needs/wants. thank you.

Sony Ericsson j300 is one of their low-end phones, although it does have some of the features you don't want (color screen, and in theory it can be used for mp3, though I never have), you don't have to use them. The keypad is excellent, though I don't care a lot for the "joystick" in place of the D-button. The phone itself is small, has good battery life, good mic and speaker, and reception. I think it may be GSM-only, so if you are on a CDMA network, no help.

I just went and looked at SE's website (have you guessed I am a SE fan?), and they have 2 more relatively new, low end phones, the j100 and the j220. The j100 is the low-end, with almost no extra features (other than a color screen), with the fewest bells and whistles, coupled with the best keypad. The j220 looks like it has some great features (which you aren't looking for anyway), but they put the keypad similar to the old t300 series on it, and that keypad sucks big time.

It would help a lot if you narrowed down what company you need the phone for...recommending a phone for Cingular when you have Verizon makes it moot...

I have a Samsung XGH-497 and I love it! I am with Cingular, no bells and whistles, just a good color phone with nice ring tones and very easy to use. Look into it.
