National Infertility Awareness Week runs October 29-November 4, so I thought it befitting to share this story with those of you who want to be parents someday.

The Daily Mail published an article on a recent study that suggests men who use mobile phones are risking infertility. The study links poor sperm counts with the number of hours a man spends talking on his mobile phone. Those who spent more than four hours a day on a cell phone had the worst sperm counts.

Electromagnetic radiation or heat generated by the handset may be the culprit. Professor Ashok Agarwal said, "Somehow electromagnetic waves may be causing direct damage to these cells and that perhaps causes a decrease in sperm production."

According the the study released by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, they divided 360 men into three groups based on their sperm count levels. Those who spent more than four hours on a mobile had a 25 percent lower sperm count than those who never used a mobile. Men who carry their phones on a belt or in a pocket may be at higher risks of exposing their groin to harmful radiation and heat. The professor also notes that sending text messages uses less power than talking, but can emit intense radiation, especially on trains.

"I've seen men on trains spending two or three hours continually texting with their mobile phones held in their laps, and they press 'Send' in the same position when it starts to seek a signal. This needs a considerable amount of power within what is effectively a metal box. We advise people to send a text with their arm outstretched next to the window when traveling on a train," he said.

So as a precaution for parents-to-be, text less, talk on the land line, and don't carry your cell phone in your pockets.

This is strictly a myth. Wireless phones do not put out radiation. They put out radiowaves. The same type that you find in cordless phones or radiotowers. The electromagnetic radiation or "heat" is non existant. The heat the you feel is a combination of two things. First, the heat from you own body. Second the heat that batteries give out from being used. We are constantly bombarded by radiowaves every day. Case in point, FM radios work inside of buildings. But, yet we have wireless phones that don't work in the same place. The signal that is being given off by wireless phones has been tested many times by the FCC , and has been cleared of being harmful. In my 8+ yrs in the wireless industry, I have seen many reports and studies. Every wireless phone sold contains a pamphlet inside the box, outlining the studies on this topic. I have seen a study the contrasted the harmfullness of these radiowaves to the harmfulness of a standard household microwave. A microwave will give off more radio waves in 30 seconds than a 1 hour wireless phone call. Besides, a wireless phone, while not in use only sends out a signal every 5-10 seconds.

I think that anyone who uses a cell phone for 2-3 hours, txting in their "laps" or otherwise, probably has other factors contributing to lower sperm counts. Did the study make any comment on the amount of stress in that persons life? If they have to work that much, then I suggest there are other more significant factors in their lives. Ever wonder why Levitra, Cialis and Viagra are marketed to middle aged professional men? I mean, how more obvious can it get? Recovering overburdened IT Management Professional (still Management, still IT, still Professional, just less burdened :)

Correlation doesn't equal causality. Also, the point is mute. Someone who is on the phone that much wouldn't be capable of having a relationship and shouldn't be a parent.
