Everything from mobile phones submerged in water tanks to LCD television sets under rain were on display throughout CES. Nothing phased these weatherproof devices made for trips to the beach or outside home entertainment. This could be just what parents and hardcore adventurers have been waiting for: personal technology they can take anywhere.
Currently offered through Verizon Wireless, the GzOne is one phone that can take the rigors of everyday use—and then some. Built to military specifications, the GzOne is a rugged clamshell that's practically indestructible. It can be dunked in up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes as well as resist dust, humidity, and drops. It can even be used in the shower! The phone's marine look is complimented by an outside porthole that displays the time. It also includes a 2-megapixel digital camera/video with flash, 128MB of memory, speakerphone, and video playback. "Drop it , Dunk it, Shake it" is their motto.
Sanyo's splash-proof digital movie camera is so practical. Unlike the GzOne, this camera cannot be used underwater or submerged, however it will resist some splashing by the pool. Available in silver, orange or blue, the XACTI records movies in a VGA resolution (640x480) and takes stills at 6 megapixels. Memory can be upgraded to a 4GB SD card that holds more images and video. What's really cool is that you can edit your pictures and video while they're still in the camera. One complaint: the camera is not easy to hold since the screen opens towards you. Sanyo also had an LCD television on display that would look very nice mounted by the jacuzzi, while various companies showcased their waterproof speakers.
