Chris Null wrote about his mixed-up credit adventure, after his identity got intertwined with another person's credit history. It wasn't identity theft, but a case of human error. What are the chances! He recommends you check your credit report once per year.
I've also been concerned because as a veteran, I was told to monitor my account for suspicious activity after an Veterans Affairs employee reported his laptop as stolen. The laptop held personal data of over 26.5 million veterans.
Today I wanted to share with you this tip from Mostly Saving Money who shows us how to get unlimited access to current credit reports.
First, you have to get a free credit report via annualcreditreport.com from one of the three reporting agencies. To get access to a current report, go to the Experian web site, enter your personal information and the report number from your annual report.
Here is Mostly Saving Money's Advice:
"Goto Experian’s homepage and take a look at the left sidebar, just below the member login you will see the heading titled credit report help and 4 links below it. The first link, view credit report again is the one that were interested in. On that page you will input your report number (taken from your free annual report), your state, SSN, and zipcode, hitting submit takes you to a complete, printable credit report. Experian updates daily, so any changes in your report for a given day can be seen the following day."
I have yet to see if this works, but I'm definitely trying it out.
