I'm obsessed with seating. I bought a used Aeron in an attempt to mitigate my sometimes awful back pain, and I go to extreme lengths with cushions and pillows to get just the right posture when I'm sitting on the couch. A few weeks ago I reported that sitting up straight might actually be bad for you. What to do?
In the spirit of pleasing us seating obsessive-compulsives, TechEBlog has a list of the five coolest chairs for home and office.
Some of these look more like implements of torture than anything you might seriously consider sitting in. The Verté Seating Office Chair has 11 spring-loaded joints that you set to conform to the ideal shape of your spine while seated. Over time, your posture should improve through the reinforcement offered by the chair. Bonus: Really creepy-looking.
The Peekaboo Isolation Chamber Chair is akin to an idea I've been hearing about for years: That you can actually rest better sitting up than lying down, though the Peekaboo is marketed more as a place to concentrate than to relax. A dark hood blocks out the outside world, so you can have a little peace and quiet, even if the rest of the room won't cooperate.
My favorite, though, is the Stokke Gravity Chair (pictured), which is a kind of cross between an ergonomic office chair and a rocking chair. Lean forward to work at a desk, or kick back on the long struts to recline to a near-prone position. All without getting out of your seat! Too bad it's over $2,000.
