What Is Microsoft Fiji?

As Windows Vista creeps ever closer to reality, news has already leaked regarding Vista's successor. The twist? We know the code name—Microsoft Fiji—but we don't exactly know what it is.

Mary Jo Foley has the scoop. Sifting through the conjecture, Fiji appears to be the first major update to Vista, either a relatively minor service pack release or a somewhat more involved update, akin to what Microsoft did with Windows 98 Second Edition (which is notable for adding USB support to Windows). That would put Fiji on a path for arrival at the end of 2007 or some time in 2008.

Fiji, however, is probably not the next major version of Windows (or whatever incarnation Microsoft's next OS may take). Code-named Vienna, this upcoming OS has been described in broad strokes by Microsoft at developer conferences for years, but it probably won't appear until around 2011. Most observers think Vienna will be Microsoft's major leap into using the web as a core component of the OS, with a radically rethought interface and a completely rewritten architecture. Wikipedia is a good resource for the collected rumors on Vienna.

What are you hoping for out of Fiji—or Vienna, for that matter?

Fiji is a bad name for an operating system. The country of Fiji is currently undergoing a military coup. Will the OS be as stable as this government?

Such Sour Grapes! Lets face it Microsoft rules the computer universe and while it seems to be as popular as ever to bash Bill Gates and Microsoft, all of you bitter critics are probably using a Microsoft OS, Microsoft office, Windows, Internet explorer and on and on and on. Without Microsoft the world would be a different place and not one for the better! Apple makes cute commercials for Yuppy techy kids who ooh and ahh over slick marketing campaigns. No one has a gun to your head to buy Microsoft products anyway. So go buy a linux OS, and get a life. Vista, Fiji, and Vienna will all provide something that you and yours couldn't in a million years!

The Fiji coup is a result of Microsft announcing that the next project will be code-named Fiji. The instability of Microsoft OS caused instability in the Fijian Government. Go figure.

Shows the intellectual depth of the people posting commentary on news articles... First off, allow me to enlighten all of you on a few facts. Bill Gates has recently made a public statement regarding his stepping down as chairman/CEO/President of microsoft so he and Melinda can concentrate more of thier time and effort into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Secondly, I challenge everyone reading this to create the "perfect operating system" that has no bugs, no vulnerabilities, that is perfectly compatible with every piece of hardware or software ever made, and make it simplistic enough that even the most ignorant person with an IQ comperable to a cucumber can operate with excellent proficiency, and still be able to keep up with the extreme technological advancments that are made almost daily. In my opinion, with all things considered, aside from a few disagreements I have regarding architecture, and the OS being so over sinplified that the poweruser is limited to the customization and modifications he/she can make to the OS in general, I think Microsoft is doing a pretty good job remaining competitive. Although, I wouldnt mind seeing MS-DOS resurrected, re-vamped, and re-instated as an open source OS so the more advanced PC users arent limited to Linux/Unix.

Quite the contrary to what some people say. The Fiji coup WAS NOT DUE TO MICROSOFT. Infact it was due to the inability of the overthrown government that led to the army to take such a action. I know because I am a citizen of the country and know more of what is happening in my country more than any outsider. Anyway, it is an honour for my country to have a namesake operating system.
