Who do you think is the bigger slob, a man or a woman? The answer may surprise you. In honor of the curious affairs of men and women, I bring you this little nugget from the Arizona Daily Star. While it's old hat (to the point where it's become an annual story among the mainstream media) that your keyboard is dirtier than a toilet, a new study from the University of Arizona has found that women have "three to four times the number of bacteria" on their office work surfaces than men do.
The results fly in the face of everything we think we know about women (dainty and immaculate) and men (filthy pigs). But while women's offices looked cleaner, a hidden menace apparently was lying just below the surface: Germs. Everywhere. (The study looked at common office implements, including computers, phones, and drawers.)
Why the big difference between guys and gals? Researcher Charles Gerba pins the blame on a few major trouble spots: Makeup cases are the worst sources of bacteria in the office. Using lotion and makeup, the story notes, is especially dangerous because it causes women to touch their face and mouth constantly, abetting the spread of those disgusting and vile bacteria.
Amusingly, Gerba also notes that women are the harbingers of more food in the office than men are (though I'm tragically guilty of this myself), an obvious germ magnet. Best quote from the story: "I was really surprised how much food there was in a woman's desk," he said. "If there's ever a famine, that's the first place I'll look for food."
Alas, guys, don't think you're off the hook: The single worst source of germs in any office? Your wallet. Think about it.
Now go wash your hands and buy some Purell.

I am reading this at work as i'm about to apply moisturizer to my face. I think I wont be applying my makeup at my desk anymore... Chusma
When it comes to workplace restrooms, I sincerely regret being a double X rather than an XY as women are downright nasty in this area. (To be fair, a male co-worker assures me that the men's rooms are just as bad, but I don't think so). Corporate America definitely has a need for executive and blue collar toilet training, especially the shameless women among us, as I hope to Hannah I never get invited to a party at a co-worker's house if they do this at home. I truly suspect many of my co-workers have yet to get the word about soap and water as they surely must marinate themselves in cheap perfumes or Euax de Skunk the night before they report to work and this is really tough to work with if one is asthmatic. Whatever happened to smelling like a French brothel employee is not appropriate to the office, food service attendant or manufacturing assembly environment? I have worked as a maid in Nevada hotel/casinos and what I've found in rooms would alert the CDC ordinarily, but we tend to accept as hazardous duty because tourists really let their hair down and allow the lice to crawl out in Vegas and Reno. Surely it's no secret by now that women oink more frequently than men in surroundings away from home and I have encountered things far more disgusting than usewd prophylactics in rooms occuppied by single women. Girls take note and don't bring your your barnyard behavior to our hotels and motels because it's past time to emerge from our "no tell" stance. Women oink and men squeal.
I am guilty of keeping lotion at my desk. However, I also have Germ-X and do use it often. I keep my desk very clean (unlike the men I work with). So let me first say I am very offended by this article. Come on! Did anyone actually read "So men are the germier sex? Well, think again"? The study was funded by The Clorox Co.! You know, the leading producers of disinfectant wipes! While I agree that the keyboard, telephone, copy and fax machines are the the harborers of many germs the office restroom is far worse. I believe the information presented is biased. Clorox used this study to generate more sales. Congratulations Clorox! You did one heck of a job.
Yow - kind of scary.

I'm sure a check of my desk would find plenty of the unwanted thriving ... But I do use disinfecting wipes to clean my computer keyboard, phone, desk top and drawer handles and other desk items at least once a week and more often if anyone has been sick. I admit to being a food (or more correctly, candy) stasher but I am careful about what is stashed. Everything is in it's original sealed wrapper or a sealed plastic bag or container. ~JmB~
