This from the could-be-true rumor department: A tech blogger says that he has a collection of more than 100 Windows Vista patches which are destined to be part of Vista Service Pack 1. The site where he's hosting the patches, vistasp1.net, is currently down. Computerworld has the details.
As is typical of Microsoft releases, many consumers have professed that they're "waiting for Service Pack 1" before upgrading to the new version of the Windows OS. Microsoft is currently "testing" SP1, and though no date for its release has been announced, a release (at least a beta release) can't be far off. But for vista, which arrived barely two months ago, such a rush to SP1 is unheard-of. By comparison, XP's first service pack arrived a full 11 months after its initial release. Vista SP1 is currently scheduled for "the second half" of 2007.
Conspiracy? Does Microsoft know that Vista sales will increase if SP1 is on the market? You be the judge.
Ethan Allen, the aforementioned blogger, alludes to that fact, noting that most of the fixes he's seen include "device driver and software compatibility technology that many users had hoped would be available in the operating system from the start." Compatibility concerns comprise most users' biggest complaints about the OS.
What's not going to be in the service pack? Security fixes. Perhaps Microsoft's claims of improved security in its OS are turning out to be more accurate than many had feared.
Since the site is down, I can't check out the fixes myself, and Microsoft will not say whether or not they are legit. However, the source is reliable and I'm inclined to believe the fixes are real. If you're having a specific problem with Vista, it might be worth checking out the site to see if a fix is available... when it's back up, that is.
