Early Daylight Saving Time a Failure

Hey, remember that trouble we went through all those weeks ago in updating our computer, PDA, and cell phone clocks so we could get with the U.S. government's decision to move Daylight Saving Time ahead by three weeks? Well, we did it all for nothing. The results are in: We didn't conserve any energy at all.

Turns out the conventional wisdom and some common sense really had it right: Setting clocks forward an hour in early March forced people to get up when it was still dark and cold outside, causing increased use of light and heat in the morning hours. Though we may have saved a little power in the evenings, any savings were offset by additional morning use. Reuters notes that most large utility companies are noting they have seen no change in power consumption over the last three weeks.

What's this mean for technology? Well, governments don't like to admit their mistakes, so I highly doubt we'll be returning to the slightly-saner standard DST schedule any time soon. And really, that would wreak even more havoc on your computers, as you'd have to unpatch or re-patch all the hard work you already did getting your systems ready for the change in the first place.

There's also that little issue that DST now ends in November. (Word has it the candy companies pushed for the change so trick-or-treaters could stay out later, thus increasing candy sales.) My bet is after a few years, after the current administration has ended, the DST rules will change again: We'll move back to an April "spring forward" but will continue to "fall back" at the November date.

Now give me a Twix.

Chris, I think the Governments' efforts are not strictly aimed at conserving energy directly, but to shed light on the over-consumption of energy that we, Americans, take for granted. As the article you linked pointed out: "That may come as no surprise to the Energy Department, which last year predicted only modest energy savings because the benefits of the later daylight hour would be offset." With that being said, the Government would have no reason to admit a mistake, because they knew that moving DST forward would not have a significant effect on energy consumption. Now give me a cookie. -ADM

Chris I don't understand your reasoning on the whole Halloween thing, unless you were being sarcastic :) Surely it's better for Halloween (and thus candy companies) if it gets darker *earlier* not later since both as a parent and a former trick-or-treater, I don't want to go out while it's still daytime... that wouldn't be any fun at all :-)

Am I the only one that thinks the electric companies are full of crap?! I don't really understand how the government can really believe they got a true reading about eletrical usage, because I don't think the power companies even know how much is being used. When is the last time you saw an employee of the power company actually read your meter? I have never seen one, and when you ask the company why someone doesn't read the meter and how can they know how much you have used, they tell you some bogus story about the go by anstandard average. (In lamens terms, they guess by your past usage. But if they have been guessing this whole time, then they are full of crap! I can not use any lights in the house for a month, and my bill will be the same as if I had every light on for a month.) Until the power companies are made liable for their theft, we will never know.

simoncohen69 - Apparently there are many people out there that only let their kids trick or treat during the daylight. Not kidding. Check this page: http://www.chatterblogging.com/2007/03/12/daylight-spending-time/ "In 1985, during the senate hearings on DST, the candy lobbyists even put a candy pumpkin on the seat of every senator."

the early changeto DST has helped me personally, allowing me to catch up on things that i couldn't do before the change. i like what i have been able to do. it isn't a case of saving money, it is a case of starting my transition to warm-weather activities early enough to make a difference. winter is not easy in northern ohio, but this change takes some of the bite out of my wallet. i don't want to go back to the old way. jim grant
