Chinese PC Maker Beats All Others in Greenness

Just in time for Earth Day... Guess who's got the best record when it comes to green manufacturing of PC hardware and consumer electronics. The surprising answer: Lenovo, the company best known in the U.S. for being the purchaser of IBM's Thinkpad division.

Greenpeace has compiled the study twice previously (you can see all three of them here), and so far it's been quite eye-opening in turning attention to the way our beloved electronics are manufactured, packaged, and recycled. Lenovo earned high marks for recycling any of its products, anywhere in the world, whether the product is working or not. The company has made enormous strides in less than a year, ranking dead last in the first study. Another high-ranking company, Sony-Ericsson, was noted for its progress in reducing or eliminating toxic chemicals from its manufacturing process. Samsung is also making good improvement on the list. Huzzah for all of them!

Bottom of the list for the second time in a row goes to Apple, which has scored a 2.7 out of 10 rating in all three surveys. Greenpeace continues to note "no progress" for the company, which seems happy to wallow in its smugness while remaining just about the only tech company I deal with that has no qualms about enshrouding its products in layers of Styrofoam and heavily lacquered cardboard boxes.

Come on, folks, we can do better than this!

Once again Chris you seem to think 'research' is a dirty word that only other reporters should be forced to use. I quote from the Australian IT newspaper: "According to standards developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Apple products are not especially toxic. The Green Electronics Council, funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency, generally gave Apple better scores than Lenovo and Dell based on 23 criteria established by the IEEE, including materials used, energy conservation and packaging." http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,21509415%5E15317%5E%5Enbv%5E,00.html If you're heck bent on being Greenpeace's Public Relations Manager, go for it ... feel free to spread more lies and bogus information. As long as Greenpeace feel it's okay to bomb oil lines or ram their boat into other ships to feel better about themselves because they prefer to believe in their lies instead of facing the truth ... then they won't get my vote or charity.

If you've ever seen Apple packaging you would know, firsthand, that claim is absurd.

Apple's claim to fame is style combined with a very functional computer. However, when it comes to style, they do what's necessary to ensure the packaging 'look' fits their agenda (no holds barred). So, it's no wonder that Apple is dead last in 'greenness' for packaging. They have superb packaging design and marketing departments. It's too bad they don't invest as much in their 'green' department to still allow for both great style and Earth-friendly packaging. The two are not mutually exclusive as Apple (and many other companies) seems to think.

I don't think dell is good, on the countrary, IBM is the the best computer.
