Numerous stories have been written of late noting the apparent success of Blu-ray and, by extension, the imminent demise of HD-DVD. We all know about the big Blockbuster news, but what else is going on behind the scenes?
Well, Digi Times says that Blu-ray is about to severely stack the deck by giving away five free Blu-ray movies to anyone who buys a new Blu-ray player or a PlayStation 3 console. While that means there'll be a whole lot more copies of Stir of Echoes and Invincible on the market (full list of titles at CrunchGear), it also means the Blu-ray camp will get a huge boost when it comes to counting market share by title, as everyone who buys one player will increase the number of those titles owned five-fold, a key market metric.
Such stunts are nothing new. I remember my first DVD player came with five DVDs in those awesome cardboard cases. Gems like U.S. Marshals, Sphere, and Lost in Space remained in my collection until I wised up and tossed them out. HD-DVD ran a similar promotion in the past, as well.
HD-DVD is getting so trampled these days that one commenter has given the technology until September to get its act together or go the way of the dodo.
Sure, you like all that picture-in-picture stuff in Tokyo Drift, but is that enough to keep people interested in a technology with less storage space and waning industry support? Is this indeed the beginning of the end for technology's latest brutal format war? The jury's obviously still out, but signs point to this battle coming to a head, and soon.
Your thoughts are welcomed, as always.

Giving away 5 crappy movies is a death blow? How come in standalone players (PS3 excluded) HD DVD is capturing 70% of the market? I'd say the $199 HD DVD player & $99 Xbox drive (both coming soon) are death blows to Blu-ray. Also, you failed to mention that the 5 free movies is a direct copy of the current HD DVD promotion which is also for 5 free movies. Your story is biased, plain and simple.
HD-DVD has been giving away 5 free movies for months. Those disk numbers do not count in the disk sales figures. This is one of the reasons Blu-ray has been leading in disk sales while lagging in player sales. Expect Blu-ray disk sales to decline following this move.
running this piece under the brand name of yahoo is a serious blow to yahoo's credibility. Full stop. was HD DVD's 5 FREE disk offer several months ago with players priced 1/2 as BDs a death blow to BD? everybody with a critical mind would know that the Blockbuster 'news' was a joke. NO RETAILER advertise what they do not have. and quoting consumer interest for the move only fools those who do not think. "less storage space and waning industry support?" what was that? the computer industry do not need 15 or 25g of media. If the industry wants, double layer DVDR would have replaced single layer DVDR years ago. so storage argument in the computer industry is mute. Hollywood doest not need BD50 especially there is ONLY manufacturer/replicator of such type of disk. It has been proven in soooo many occasions that that BD50 is insignificant (so why pay extra cost for something that is significant?) HD DVD titles has way more features at 30GB then BD. just Compare 300 on HD DVD and BD, and blood diamond. and the general consensus in the gaming world is XBOX 360 games on DVD beat the crap of PS3 games on BD25 .. so go figure. its mind blowing that some claim exclusive support for BD with the aim of ending this format war. ;)
Sounds like a blu-boy if i have ever seen one, how are oem companies going to sel standalone players for bluray if all of them are ps3's i think you'll see the oem players jump to the hd-dvd side in the next few months because there is a market for them to make money there. oh and also the ps3 is not a finalized spec it's not even complete and first generation players are going to loose features plus be locked down by a terrible DRM called BD+ have fun with that turbo.

Well that's a pretty smart move by blu-ray in the long run. I myself would be more inclined to get an HD-DVD capable player, but that's just because I'm more likely to buy a 360 than a PS3. Oh, and I love the picture you chose Chris.
