Toshiba Feels Left Out, Gets In on Battery Recall

It's not 4.1 million, but Toshiba is now recalling 340,000 Sony laptop batteries that it has sold in recent months. Only 100,000 of those batteries were sold in the United States. Dynabook and Satellite brands are affected, and the notebooks were manufactured between March and May of 2006, so if you have a slightly older machine, you should be OK.

Still no word from IBM or Lenovo regarding the recent exploding laptop at LAX, but recent reports have stated that it was a Sony battery, the culprit in all the recalls from Dell, Apple, and Toshiba. (You also have to wonder if Sony laptops use Sony batteries...)

Toshiba doesn't yet have a recall web site that I can point you to in order to check whether your computer is affected, but I'll update this page as soon as Toshiba gives me a URL. Stay tuned, Toshiba owners, and remember: Don't panic. (Update: Toshiba recall link added below.)

Meanwhile, here are links to all vendors currently recalling bum batteries (which I'll also update as more companies get in on the game):

I think that before it is over Sony will recall their Viao too. I have owned one for five years and had to replace the battery once which cost me over 200.00 and that battery would not hold a charge and my computer continually got extremly hot until it quit a few weeks ago. I contacted Sony and they told me their batteries for their laptops were not involved. I told them I don't believe them and I am holding on to that computer for them to replace

The toshiba recall didn't have anything to do with exploding batteries. They wouldn't hold a charge.
