Wow. You hear stories like this all the time, but you never see photographic proof. The Inquirer has some amazing photos of a Dell laptop bursting into flames, shot by an attendee at a Japanese conference who was sitting just a few feet away.
Per the short story: "The damn thing was on fire and produced several explosions for more than five minutes."
Click through for some jaw-dropping photos. Sadly, there's no video of the thing burning through the table. But there it is, on fire.
(Please note: The picture to the right is not a photo of an exploding laptop, but rather a bomb test that I use whenever a piece of electronics explodes or catches fire. We don't have publishing rights to the actual pictures... but click on over and you can see them in the flesh.)

Would just like to add my chorus of voices who have found that DELL Laptop computers are a hoax regard dependability and prompt service. I've had my Inspiron 8500 now for almost 3 years. Paid over $2100 at that time for all the bells and whistles including an extended waranty. Nothing but a head ache. Dell has the nerve to sell so called " in house service contracts" which turn out to be nothing more than a sham system whereby YOU fix your OWN computer at your HOME with your OWN TOOLS. What you get when you call for service is some barely english speaking cliche ridden happy talking person in India who reads a diagnostic monitor with a lot of pre written scripts that in my case took hours of repeated non helpful testing to determine that my hard drive was defective. Several friends who are more knowledgeable than I said early on that they thought my hard drive was the problem. It was acting intermittently and eventually failed all together. I was barely able to save some of my data. Rather than spend less than a hundred dollars to at least send me a replacement hard drive DELL stalled me over a period of months. By the way the "technician" from India had me unscrewing parts on the wrong side of computer as he was suppose to be telling me how to take out the defective hard drive. DELLS DAYS OF PHONY ADVERTISING THEIR GREAT SERVICE AND RELIABILTY ARE OVER IN MY BOOK++they will never be a product I would buy or recommend. The sooner they go under the better... If you are looking for good value don't bother with Dell. Local eye to eye service that is handy and effective is much more important. Dave
I also have a Dell Inspirion 8500 and it has been nothing but one huge headache since I purchased it back in 2003. At this point to Laptop is not working at all after speaking to Dell Tech support it was determined that the mother board had died. Dell wanted to charge me $533 to repair this problem guraranteeing me a warranty for 90 days. I AM FINISHED WITH DELL. I HAVE VOWED TO NEVER BUY ANOTHER DELL PC....PLEASE HELP ME IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DELL.

Hey, I love the bomb test photo! I guess when a piece of your equipment explodes or catches on fire. You really do feel like a bomb went of next to you, and in your wallet! Thanks for the laugh. L.A.M.
