Longing to jump onto the YouTube bandwagon, but wary of pricey video cameras and the intricacies of digital video? Check out this new bite-sized camcorder that shoots video clips and uploads them to YouTube in a flash.

The Flip Video (discovered by my fellow gadget hounds at Gearlog) is a palm-sized, AA battery-powered camcorder that records VGA-quality video at about 30 frames per second—that is, noticeably better than the videos you can shoot with a camera phone, but well below DVD quality (and good luck shooting usable footage in the dark). Once your done making your movie (you can shoot about 30 minutes worth of video on the 512MB Flip Video, or an hour on the 1GB version), just flip open the USB port on the side of the camera and plug it right into your PC or Mac; from there, the Flip Video desktop software takes over, allowing you to edit your clips, archive them to your hard drive, or upload them directly to YouTube or Grouper (a competing online video site). No, you can't wirelessly upload your flicks to YouTube from the field—that would be cool—but at $120 for the 512MB Flip Video and $150 for the 1GB variety, it's hard to complain.

I am surprised by your low-light comment. I am really impressed by the video quality of this tiny camcorder, even in low light. The uploading is simple and the camera is ultra convenient.

Gave one to my Daughter and her distant family at Thanksgiving. Since then, I don't feel like I'm missing out so much on my grandkids! In fact, my 7-yr-old granddaughter has swiped it a couple times to produce, direct, and star in her own video flip clips. Of course she is exceptional, but the flip is too.
