My fiancé and I are planning a romantic trip to Italy next month for our honeymoon, and I'm sure it will be the vacation of a lifetime—but that eight-hour flight demands some on-board entertainment. Unfortunately (or, I suppose, fortunately), my better half has banned my G4 PowerBook for the duration of our trip, so I'm in the market for a video iPod and a battery booster to go with it.
Here's the thing: I refuse to get one of those bulky,
backpack-like battery boosters that seem to be the norm. Instead, I want something like the battery wallet for the
Samsung UpStage (which is just about the only feature on that phone that's an unqualified success); in short, a cool, protective case that hides a battery pack inside. Seems like a no-brainer, yet they seem to be in short supply.
I did happen upon a couple of options from iPod accessory manufacturer iLuv, however. First up is the
i604 ($65) for the 60/80GB video iPods (there's also the thinner
i603 for the 30GB iPod), a tough silicone case with the external, lithium polymer battery molded into the bottom. It's a nice design, dispensing with the ungainly backpack look and adding just about a half-inch of length to your iPod. Even better, the reviewers at
iLounge wrung almost nine-and-a-half hours of video playback from the i603—with a dead internal iPod battery, no less.
Looking even better, though, is iLuv's new
i606B ($70), a folding leather case that hides the external battery in the back flip. Connectors for your iPod are build into the case, so there's no dangling cables to deal with, and the i606B is rated for up to 42 hours of audio playback on the 30GB iPod, or 55 hours on the 60/80GB model—roughly the same specs as on the i604/i603 cases, so I'm hoping for at least nine hours of video playback.
Seen any other wallet-like battery boosters for the iPod? I'm all ears.
