If you've been balking at the sky-high price of the TiVo Series3 HD DVR, hang on for just a little longer—seems that a cheaper version is coming later this year.

According to Ars Technica, TiVo CEO Tom Rogers revealed Wednesday that a "mass appeal-priced HD unit" will arrive in stores "later this year." Rogers didn't go into any further detail, but Ars Technica predicts that the company is shooting for a price tag that's $400 or less—a considerable drop from the $800 sticker price for the HD-capable Series3 TiVo, which bowed late last year.

Don't want to wait for the "Series3 Lite", as Ars Technica is calling it? Then now's a good time to plunk down some cash for the current Series3 TiVo—you can get a $200 rebate on the box until June 16, although there's scuttlebutt that the price break could last through the summer.
