Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Drops to $179

Ooohhh, I love a good price war. Both the Blu-ray and HD DVD camps have been duking it out with deep price cuts and various free movie offers, and now here's Microsoft slashing the price of its HD DVD add-on player for the Xbox 360, and throwing in five free discs in the bargain.

Microsoft announced today that starting August 1, it will cut the price of the 360's HD DVD player to about $180, from $200, and that anyone who snaps up a player in August or September can pick five free movies (from a list of 15) to go with their new toy. Both the Blu-ray and HD DVD armies have been tossing around these "free movies" offers for some time now, and I'm more than happy to see the trend continue.

As a 360 owner myself, I've been on the fence about the HD DVD add-on, but this price cut and the free movies may just push me over the edge—not so much because I think HD DVD is going to "win," but rather because I'm ready for more HD movies in my den, regardless of the format.

Buy an Oppo up converting DVD player while you wait for the HD/Blue Ray wars to end. I have a Panasonic's 42" plasma w/ the Oppo and am extremely happy.

I've already got the Oppo player, and I like it a lot -- but for $180 and five free movies, I figure it's money well spent (for me, at least) no matter which format comes out on top. By the time there's a big winner, I'll probably be ready to upgrade the player anyway. That said, I'm not sure I'd advise buying dozens of HD DVD discs quite yet.

Yeah 180 but that's just for the add-on drive. You also need to have an Xbox 360 (399). Now we're up to 580!! Cmon MS give us a real price cut. The PS3 is 499 (while supplies last) and it's a built in Blu-ray player and Wi-Fi enabled and it up converts dvd's to 1080i!! But I am sure MS will give us a better price cut as we get closer to the holidays..
