The New Palm Centro: a Teeny, Tiny Treo

Palm's latest smartphone, dubbed the Centro, got a brief, eyes-only showing at a Sprint technology summit yesterday, and word is that this new, "shrunken-down 755p" is pretty small—maybe too small.

Gearlog's Sascha Segan got a brief hands-on with the diminutive phone (Segan wasn't allowed to snap any photos, although he confirms that it looks a lot like these fuzzy pictures from Engadget), and he reports that the Palm OS-packing device has a QWERTY keypad so small that he could barely type. Sprint reps were tight-lipped about actual specifications, although in a press release, Palm conformed that the Centro runs on the Palm OS (not the new Linux-based Palm platform, apparently), boasts 3G EV-DO access, and "targets a younger demographic." Hmmm. No official details on price or availability, although according to Segan, word around the campfire was that the Centro would arrive this fall for $99 with a service agreement. Stay tuned.

Doesn't look big enough to be all that useful in a work setting. But who knows, the photos aren't official so we can't be too sure. I prefer the larger phones if it has a full keyboard.
