A job posting for an Apple "Camera Project Manager" has the Web buzzing that a future version of the iPod Touch might finally get its own, built-in camera. Also: Video editing tools coming to the iPhone?
Here's what started the whole "camera for the Touch?" thing:
this job listing over at Apple's "Job Opporunities" Web site, spotted by the
eagle-eyed bloggers at AppleiPhoneApps (via
AppleInsider).
This listing calls for a "Camera Engineering Project Manager" to "drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and" … wait for it … "iPod."
Update: Apple has since deleted the "iPod" reference, although AppleInsider has a screenshot of the original ad; are we just talking a typo, or a belated attempt at secrecy? Interesting ... and indeed, a camera for the iPod Touch (after all, if any iPod were to get a camera, I'm guessing it would be the Touch) would be the natural next step for the device, although it might also bulk up the Touch's otherwise slim profile.
Rumors
have already been flying that the next iPhone (expected to be announced in June, although Apple has kept mum so far) will get an upgraded 3.2-megapixel camera plus video recording—and given the fact that the two-megapixel snapper on the current iPhone 3G is such a bust, I sure hope so.
Speaking of which: Buzz over the past weekend has it that the upcoming iPhone software 3.0 might come with a basic video editing suite, including "editing, scrubbing and clip functions,"
according to The Unofficial Apple Weblog.
Plenty of existing video-capable phones already have on-board video editing features (Nokia's Nseries handsets spring to mind), so it seems logical that a (supposed) future iPhone with video capture would get at least a few rudimentary video editing features of its own.
Of course, this is all rumor for now, but it's worth noting that the buzz about a new, upgraded camera for the iPhone—and maybe even the iPod Touch—has gone from a low whisper to a steady drumbeat. I'm just sayin'.
