AT&T to Offer Rebates on the iPhone?

Ever since the iPhone was introduced back in January, Apple has held firm on the phone's sky-high price tag ($499 for the 4GB model, and a whopping $599 for the 8GB variety). Now comes word that AT&T may prevail on Cupertino to allow some rebates on the hotly anticipated handset.

Mac site AppleInsider found a research note from an analyst claiming that AT&T may dole out rebates between $50 and $150 for iPhone buyers who sign two-year service agreements. "We are heading rebates of $50-150 that will be offered by AT&T to lower the price points for iPhone...and to entice customers to sign longer term voice and data contracts," wrote American Technology analyst Shaw Wu.

Of course, even if AT&T were to go ahead and offer iPhone rebates up to $150, that would leave a $450 price tag for the 8GB model and $350 for the 4GB version-tough pills to swallow, considering the two-year contract you'd have to sign. Personally, I keep going back and forth on the iPhone; yes, amazing interface (or at least, so it looks from the demos) plus music and videos, but no 3G, relatively low memory, and way pricey. What about you? Would a $150 (or even $50) rebate be enough to make you sign on the dotted line?

This generation iPhone will be outdated by the end of the year. No amount of rebate will get me to buy.

I'll stick with my LG Chocolate thank-you. (At a reasonable $29 after rebates.) I just don't see the iPhone as being all that great and magnificent, really.

I was going to get an iPhone even if the price went to $1,000. So to have it be $450 would be a bargain in my book.

I am sold and will probably buy the first upgraded version, too.
