Xbox 360 users have been buying TV shows and movies from the Xbox Video Marketplace for almost a year now. So when will the PlayStation 3 video store arrive? Sony's answer: before the PS4 comes out. Nope, I'm not kidding.
Kotaku found this snippet from an interview with Sony exec Jack Tretton, who promises that a video store for the PS3 is "not something we see happening in 2007...but I would say the near future and clearly within this platform cycle."
Um, excuse me? "Near future" doesn't sound too bad, but that last phrase sets off alarm bells. "Clearly within this platform cycle" essentially means, "before the PS4 arrives." Given that the consoles in the PlayStation family have a lifespan of about five years, and the PS3 came out in late 2006, that means we'll definitely see a PlayStation video store by...2011 or so.
Again, I'm amazed by Sony's mind-boggling ability to drop the ball. A company with the scope and resources of Sony should be ahead of Microsoft in the video download arena, not eating its dust—as Tretton himself admits: "Everybody in the world has rightly pointed out that Sony is uniquely positioned with having a great heritage in hardware, and a great heritage in software—they own a successful movie studio and a successful gaming division. So just based on our internal resources alone we should be able to take advantage of synergies." I couldn't have put it better myself. So...what's the holdup?
Let's hear it, PS3 owners...were you expecting a video store by now? Or are you happy with your built-in Blu-ray deck?

xbox-360 blows away the ps3 and mac computers. macs just plain suck, and you are a ----- in retard mike
Look, Macs don't suck. They can do just about anything, and they probably can put out better performance than a PS3 if properly used and configured. I'm not a Microsoft fan, but the 360 is the best console for gaming that I have ever used and owned. Macs have superior graphics and gameplay quality themselves. Microsoft and Apple are both the best in terms of hardware/software. Apple just isn't in the gaming business as much as Microsoft is. Apple is in the entertainment business (iPod), and Microsoft isn't as much (Zune). Mike is wrong though. The 360 is better for gaming because it was built for it. Macs were built for everything else. Gaming on Macs are very good in my experience, and graphics are almost equal of the 360 on the Intel Macs. Either way, PS3's are just not there yet. But both of you are wrong to take stands like that trashing the software kings. They're all good at what they do.
A video store? No. Who wants that? That's why we have blockbuster, cable, and satellite. I wasn't expecting to do everything on my PS3 when I bought it. Buying movies on blu-ray is good enough for me.
The way I see it, Sony has 12-18 months to have a video store and something in place to make everyone want to use blue ray or it will be a BETA rerun. If they blow this, Blue Ray will become useless and the PS3 will become the 3DO all over again. Great possibilities but nothing to validate the price tag. As a playstation lover and Microsoft hater, please dont make me have to buy an XBox.
