PS3 Controller is Finally Ready to Rumble

After months of dissing force feedback-enabled controllers as a "last generation feature," Sony has finally wised up and announced the rumble-ready DualShock 3 for the PlayStation 3.

Wired Game|Life reports that the DualShock 3 will shake, rattle, and roll its way into Japan in November, while gamers in Europe and the U.S. will have to wait until spring 2008. Ugh.

Sony surprised everyone back in 2006 when it announced that its long-awaited PS3 would arrive without rumbling controllers—a mainstay in the gaming industry for years (and a feature that adds an extra layer of realism to almost any game). Why no rumble? Sony's story kept changing: first it chided rumble as a "last-generation feature," then yesterday, execs claimed that adding rumble to the PS3's motion-sensing controller was "difficult technologically" (although as Game|Life points out, the Wii remote has both rumble and motion-sensing features). Of course, Sony also happened to be embroiled in a patent dispute with the force-feedback experts at Immersion over rumble in PlayStation controllers; the case was finally settled in March. Think that had anything to do with it?

Anyway, Sony also released a list of games that'll work with the DualShock 3, including such titles as Vampire Rain, Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 4, MotorStorm, and Resistance: Fall of Man. (Check out Opposable Thumbs for the full list).

So, show of hands: who's excited about getting a rumbling PS3 controller?

Wow now you get to pay an extra $50 to get what comes with the 360 and Wii. Good job Sony getting every cent out of us you can. $100 to get HD cables,$50 for rumble controller. I guess we were lucky they packed in a controller to start with.

(to previous post:) you do know that a $100 HDMI cable transfers the exact same signal that a $15 HDMI cable does? and besides, (cost-wise) it's still better than getting a 360 Elite and a HHDDVVBVD (Red vs Blue reference) add-on drive. But rumble is better than no rumble... I prefer it over naught.

wow #1 is a retard. who would pay 100 bucks for a hdmi cable? i'm pretty sure they will start packing these peice of crap rumble controllers with the console, duh.and does your 360 have any motion controls? NO. wii dont count as it is a last gen system that came out really late. if the ps2 would have added something like a wiimote it would have killed it in every way, oh and it can even play a dvd like almost everything else no days other than a wii. the ps3 is cheaper than 360 just with the hddvd and console, dont matter which flavor, even before you add all the other crap that ps3 comes with inside. what does 360 got that is better? um halo 3 well i've played the first 2 and they are fun games but most def not the best i've played, and i will eventually be able to play it on my pc anyway, just like the first 2. same with bioshock. take them 2 away and i dont know any other game that appeals to me maybe gears of war but not more than gt5 or uncharted do, or even metal gear solid

The only argument for how PS3 is better comes down to bluray. "Oh but PS3 has a bluray and you have to buy that extra for 360." The war isn't between who can play better HD movies? The war is which is a better console. Sony is lost at what to do, so they think bring a new controller is going to fix it? (or maybe we well have some online chat world and that well help sales?) The only thing PS3 has going for it is because it has bluray (and the reason it came out so late). Out of the 3 million that have bought a ps3, how many bought it just for the bluray? Thats the only reason it is even selling. Not because of games, or sixaxis. The reason XBOX 360 is selling is because of games! PS3 can't say the same thing.
