So, good news first: looks like the rumors of a $399, 40GB PlayStation 3 might have some substance. Sony announced a 40GB version of the console for Europe, priced at 399 euros and set for release on Wednesday—news that bodes well for a U.S. release. Bad news: the new, Europe-bound console won't be able to play PlayStation 2 titles. Doh!

I've just picked up a 60GB PS3 last Friday, as the story of PS2 compatibility getting worse and worse. I'm afraid that the versions of PS3 with full PS2 compatibility will become a rare beast. Better get it while it's still available. I'll replace the HDD with a big laptop SATA drive too.
Who would spend that kind of money for a console with awful games and no backwards compatibility? For 50 bucks more get a 360 120GB hard drive and backwards compatibility on most games. It also has memory card slots and 3 USB ports. Bad move Sony. Death for the PS3!
Sony continues to poke themselves in the eye. First, they let their most solid exclusives slip away with barely a fight. Then they procrastinate the release of their 2 hottest titles far longer then necessary, (Heavenly Sword, Lair) but then when they finally come out, gamers get the feeling that they were rushed out. Thus, not living up to expectations. Finally, they eliminate BC to force gamers to scrape through the garbage curently available on PS3 hoping that once they get through Resistance Fall of Man, that there will be SOMETHING worthwhile available. Such thinking drove me over to Xbox 360 and I have never been happier. Sad because I have owned a Playstation, PS2, and PSP. Boo for Sony...
As a gamer and moviebuff, I have 4 consoles: (2) Xbox 360s, (1)-Wii, (1)-PS2, (1)-Original Xbox. I will be buying the $399.99 PS3 40gb for mainly Blu-Ray movies. I don't care about the card reader or backwards compatibility. Why play older games on the PS3 and not utilize the HD format on your HDTV, to me serves no purpose? Convenient yes, but not a deal breaker for me personally. Even the 360 playing older original games I don't do due to this fact - they look terrible. I think this is a brilliant move on Sony's part. It will be the least expensive blu-ray player on the market. Now if you want the backwards compatibility for games get the 60g (which is being discontinued) or buy the 80g at the unannounced new low price of $499.99. I really believe once the developers start utilizing the storage on the Blu-Ray it will make the games better (ie: Heavely Sword has 10gb in SOUND alone). Yes, M$ has a running headstart on the 360 and XBOX Live - which I am happy with both overall. The sad part, there will never be a true winner in the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray format War. The losers are us for taking a chance on either.

I got one just after they dropped the price of the 60GB model. I wanted one that was fully backwards compatible through hardware and not software like the 80GB version, because there isn't that many good games out yet, so I wanted to augment the lineup with PS2 games I never had a chance to play before I sold it. So for me it was a no-brainer. Personally, I don't see how it's a good idea for them to take it out. It's especially funny that Sony has always said how important BC is for the PS3, and then they take it out. Look thorugh Joystiq's or Kotaku's stories to see what I'm talking about. How do they even turn it off, anyway? The 80GB model has BC with software, can't this be the same with a smaller hard drive (and less USB ports and no memory card readers...)? And what about Wi-Fi? Is that still in? I've read about this the last few days and I never even thought of that until now. BTW, no fanboi here. I also have a 360, Wii, DS, and soon, a PSP. It's all about the games.
