After months of speculation, the CEO for AT&T, the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, has confirmed what most of us had already guessed: a 3G version of the iPhone is coming, and it'll arrive next year.

Bloomberg News (by way of Engadget) is reporting that AT&T's Randall Stephenson let news of the 3G iPhone slip yesterday, at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, Calif. "You'll have it next year," he told the audience, adding that Apple and Steve Jobs "will dictate what the price of the phone is." Beyond those tidbits, Stephenson didn't offer up any more details.

Speculation on a 3G iPhone began practically moments after the original, EDGE-only iPhone was announced back in January, and the iPhone's lack of speedy data access (not counting its Wi-Fi abilities) has been one of the major sticking points for both users and reviewers. Jobs has maintained that a 3G radio on the current iPhone would be too much of a battery hog, but from what Stephenson is saying, Apple engineers may be close to solving that problem.

So when will we get an official announcement? The original iPhone was unveiled during the annual Macworld conference last January, so an iPhone 2.0 announcement may well happen at the upcoming Macworld, a little over one month away. And for how much? Apple has a habit at releasing updated products for the same prices as the original, so I'm guessing $399. Stay tuned.

@matt: Yep, I was thinking the same thing re: more GBs. Also: thinner, lighter...and less slippery.

Anyone else afraid to buy a first generation version of anything? What if they slash the price again? (Kidding of course!). A 3G phone would be cool. I held off on buying the first generation, and then when they came out with the 2nd version, and slashed the price, i was gun-shy. So this would be good, but you'd better believe, I'll wait and won't be one of the "first-ers". :)

Who the hells needs a phone with so much god-damm storage space? The Iphone is overrated. I should know, I manage an At&t store. Not to mention the lack of mms.
