Gadgets come and gadgets go, but a few standout moments in technology will forever redefine how we entertain and enrich our lives. Pong, the Motorola StarTAC, CD ROMs, Bluetooth, and, oh yeah, that Internet—all tools that will stick in our collective mind.
How well can you spot a winning technology in the offing?
That's what we try and do every year at The Last Gadget Standing, an event sponsored by Yahoo! Tech and held during The International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Think of it as "Survivor" meets "American Idol." While most people at the show are scurrying about trying to find the newest and coolest gadgets, we add another dimension. Let's find the coolest gadgets that actually stand a chance of lasting and changing the way we live. Which products will survive long after the show is over?
The photo included is from last year's event, where the Data Tornado and the HP TouchSmart PC were both winners. (You can see the story.) The Data Tornado is a cable that lets you move everything from one computer to another and the TouchSmart PC is a large-screen, integrated, kitchen-friendly design.
Past winners have included such notables as Roomba, Pioneer's Inno, Car Chip, and the Celestron SkyScout, to name a few.
At the live event on Jan. 9, 2008, to be held in the Las Vegas Convention Center, we'll demonstrate live the 10 coolest gadgets we discovered. Each of the 10 finalist will have four minutes to demo their product to the live audience and convince them that they are worthy of the Last Gadget title. Meanwhile, before we get to that live audience, we need your help in narrowing down the list.
Until we haul out to Vegas with 10 of the coolest products ever, we've got work to do.
Take a look at my next post and let me know which the gadgets listed you'd pick from this list.
Fast Facts: Last year CES had almost 2,700 exhibitors with thousands of new products. It occupied 1.6 million net square feet (about 35 football fields) and had 140,000 self-acclaimed geeks visiting.

That's not the entirety of it though, baschristensen. Usability and practicality also count.
How about BOTH!! Now that'd be something worthwhile!!

The next gadget of importance must not only be something of value, it must be made durable too. All too often these days we see manufacturers creating gadgets from cheep plastic, knowing it has a limited life span as a result of what its made from. As a result a good idea may become a "Cheep" thrill that no-one wants to invest in again. Manufacturers MUST return to the idea that things need to be built to last. Then maybe we will find something worth holding on to.
