You Know You’ve Got a Problem If...

When I started in this business, the sign of a true tech-addiction was your ability to imitate a modem's sound. Or to log in from anywhere including a pay telephone. And, when you came home you immediately logged into CompuServe or Prodigy—even before going to the bathroom.

Today the signs of addiction are more nuanced, but equally demented.

You know you're an addict if...

  • You scan the room for wireless routers before making initial eye contact.
  • You carry more cables than underwear when you travel.
  • You buy a new home based on Verizon FiOS availability, not school district.
  • You sneak a last peek at your Blackberry mail after the stewardess reads you the riot act about non-approved FAA devices.
  • Your thumb has a permanent scroll-wheel callus.
  • You can't remember anything about the phone call you just finished because you were too busy reading your screen at the same time.
  • When your mother invites you to dinner you ask for an email confirmation.
  • And finally, is that a wireless sniffer in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?

Got any other signs of tech-addiction? Please share.

I like your ad, berrrrrrrry funny hehe. Oh yes, I'd like to ad one. You're, indeed, an adict if you're constantly running yahoo messenger on 2 pcs plus your cell phone at the exact same time, hehe. Christianandtropical

this article was very funny and I remember one time when I had a proble but mine was with a cell phone. I had just got it and I was totally compulsive with it. I have since learned to control myself. But isnt it the truth that rely too much on something as powerful as a blackberry or cellphone?

No! I do not have anymore signs, but I do agree with the coming home and not even stopping to use the bathroom first. That would be me - EVERY SINGLE DAY - !!!! I cant help it. Thanks for your site, it has really made me think about how I am spending my time.

You know you're addicted when instead of having a cigarette after having sex, you find it more important to check your messages.
