3G Wireless Cards Now Work on Macs, Too!

I've raved and raved for months about the wonders of 3G broadband data cards from Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, and Cingular/AT&T. These cards, which go into your laptop's PC card slot, use high-speed 3G EVDO and HDSPA mobile networks to give you broadband speeds anywhere there's a cell phone signal.

This means you don't have to hunt around for a Wi-Fi hotspot at the airport or local coffee shop to check your email. I find the cards particularly useful when I'm stuck in traffic in a taxi, usually on my way to the airport. And all for around $60 per month.

Trouble is, until now this great service has only been available to PC users. But it looks like Apple has finally released software to make these cards usable on the most recent Intel-based MacBooks and MacBook Pros (thanks, Engadget). The software even supports the latest EVDO card standard, Rev-A, which offers six to eight times faster broadband speeds than the initial "Rev 0" cards that have been out for a couple of years now.  For information on specific cards and services and to download the software, go to this page on Apple's site.

    I need advice regarding accessing log in screens. I was always able to access my yahoo or company email site but now when I hit the login button, I get the page that shows site not available. Is there a setting in my internet options? or something else. Thanks Joe K

    I've been using a Verizon USB card on both my Mac and PCs...it works great and switches between units easily.

    Obviously, I can't afford a laptop that provides a slot for a wireless 3G Card. I just wish Verizon provided a USB Card that provided Broadband. I see two antennas from my back porch. My house is on top of a mountain. Unfortunately, trees during the summer block the service. The most I've ever been able to get is National Access aka Old Fashioned Dial Up which is what I am on as I type this. Don't know if the AC595U is inferior or the trees block the service but it's a pain in the neck. The bad thing is I'm stuck with the service for another year. Oh well, at least I have dial up. At&t can't even get service here.
