Our DVR mysteriously fills up quickly. It could be the recording-in-perpetuity of every Drake and Josh and Suite Life of Zack and Cody episode. ("Do we really have to record them all?" I plaintively ask my troupe.) On closer examination, however, it seems that American Idol is a key culprit. This, I don't mind because it means they can start watching the show a little later, buzz through the long stretches of commercials, and finish watching in less time. Deleting, which the kids seldom seem to do, is something their father and I do when they're not looking.
All this is a way of getting to the announcement by TiVo and Verizon that Verizon Wireless customers now have the ability to tell their TiVos to record shows while they are far from the family room, on the road, as long as their cell phones are near.
Verizon Wireless customers with the Get It Now service can pay $1.99 a month for the downloadable application that allows you to record from the road on Series 2 and Series 3 TiVos.
Obviously, in our house, we are not struggling to find time to record on our DVR (which is not a TiVo brand.) But I can see this as being useful if you're working long hours away from home and forget to record a favorite show to watch when you have the time to watch it, not when a network or cable station deigns to air it.
Would you sign up for a service like this if it were available to you? Or is it an unnecessary extra? Remember, you can schedule TiVo recordings via the web with your computer, too.
