If you've got relatives who can't make it to a graduation ceremony, here's something worth checking out: Does the school broadcast the ceremony via the Internet?
Some schools have been doing it for years. Others are signing onto the trend this year. It's a nice way for family and friends to witness a milestone they may not be able to see in person. Long distance is one obstacle, but so is the fact that many schools now limit the number of tickets to each family for seats at graduation ceremonies.
As the AP reports, the University of Pennsylvania has been webcasting graduation ceremonies since 2003. A suburban St. Louis high school webcast its first graduation this year, and 125 people watched as the school's 530 seniors graduated. It was particularly meaningful for one family who relocated there from New Orleans after Katrina; relatives who couldn't make the trip watched via the web.
I wish it were available for my daughter's upcoming 8th grade graduation. Has webcasting made it possible for anyone in your family to see a ceremony they might have otherwise missed?
