It didn't take long for the mass email with photo attached to become a popular, more immediate way to let friends and family know the joyful news of the birth of a baby. Well, with new parents turning to their cell phones to make lots of calls to deliver the big news, it didn't surprise me to come upon this innovative phone notification service that lets lots of people know about a baby's arrival all at once via cell phone.

It's called, appropriately, BabyBlurt, and here's how it works. Parents sign up on BabyBlurt.com (free for five recipients, $9.99 for unlimited.) Enter all the names, email addresses, and telephone numbers of friends and family you want to notify at the same time. When the big moment arrives, a parent can call a secure, toll-free number, and record a message about the birth, which BabyBlurt will send to everyone on the list.

Of course, parents may want to think about who is on this list. You wouldn't want to blast a birth announcement to grandparents, or close family and friends. For a few people, it could be a tricky choice. On the other hand, it's a great way to include lots of people you might miss if you spent hours wearily dialing after the birth.

Micha Hanson, a co-creator of BabyBlurt, said he and another developer came up with the idea after he learned from other new parents that they spent hours making cell phone calls and delivering the same news several times over. And since some hospitals don't allow cell phones inside, dads are often making all of those calls outside, far from mom and baby. "After Lukas came home, Kelly (the other developer) and I started working on BabyBlurt," Hanson says in this company release, "and I used the service with our second child to call all my friends, family and co-workers with a single call to announce the birth of Olivia!"

Expectant parents, check it out!
