Fisher-Price has teamed with Allegro Multimedia once again to develop an easy-to-follow, video game approach to learning to play an instrument.

"I Can Play the Guitar" does not need a PC to work. It comes with a MIDI guitar that plugs into a TV. By matching the color-coded keys on the guitar with the same-colored bars highlighted on the TV screen, kids can begin to learn how to play notes on a guitar and play songs.

The guitar game is designed for kids ages 5 and older. Think "Guitar Hero" for the young school-age set. It takes a similar four-step approach to learning how to play notes and read music as "I Can Play Piano," which was introduced last year and got a 2006 Educational Toy of the Year nomination from the Toy Industry Association.

A more advanced version by Allegro, Guitar Wizard for kids ages 12 and up, which does connect to the PC, will be released within the next year. For a look at Piano Wizard, check the related links below.

"I Can Play Guitar" is available beginning this month for $100. It comes with a cartridge containing six songs for the guitar. Additional song and game cartridges will cost $15 each.

I saw this while shopping this afternoon and must say it looks very intriguing. My almost six year old plays his big brother's Guitar Hero with amazing proficiency so I am wondering if he would like this as well. I was really attracted to the fact that it actually teaches some real mechanics like chords and strumming actual strings.

I love this idea, but I don't know if it would hold my sons attention or if this will be another toy that is cool for 3 days and then collects dust. And for the $100 price tag.... I am not willing to chance it! I think I will buy him an inexpensive one and see how it holds his attention first.
