I think we all know the kind of sleep you get when you decide to go to bed with a TV blaring. It's not good. But I like the name The Sleep Council in Britain gives to the kind of sleep teens get when they go to sleep watching TV, listening to music, or using other electronic gadgets: "junk sleep."
A poll of 1,000 kids, ages 12 to 16, found that 30 percent go on four to seven hours of sleep a night, far from the recommended eight or nine or more that teens often get when they can. As Reuters reports, nearly all of the teenagers surveyed had a phone, music system, or TV in their bedroom and two-thirds of them had all three. What, no PC, too? A 2005 Pew Internet & American Life project study found that 26 percent of U.S. teens spent time online in their bedrooms, and that's two years ago.
As Helene Emsellem, a sleep physician, told the NPR's Allison Aubrey, "As we have more and more ways to stay connected at night, we've seen an exaggeration of the night-owlism in teenagers." Research shows that teens' internal clocks shift toward much later sleep times, and tech that keeps teens engaged and not relaxed doesn't help—especially when they have to get up early for school.
Check out Emsellem's recommendations to help teens sleep better in the article. (Link below) For starters, she tells parents to take TVs out of teens' bedrooms, enforce turn-off times on PCs and phones—every tech gadget except music players. Ensellem encourages teens to listen to music at night—but tune into a soothing playlist, on low volume, that helps them relax and go to sleep.
If you've got more tips to help kids de-tech at the end of the day and get the sleep they need, please post them below.

Umm.... Soothing music at low volume? They must mean AC/DC and Twisted Sister at a pretty loud volume. It works for me.
Right on the money.
staying up with internet games all night, what's the solution?
This isn't just an issue for teens, I know many adults who are far worse in terms of habits than most teens I know - it seems destined to only become worse with the plethora of mobile devices that will continue to come out in coming months. Jeff
My daughter has the tv and dvd player in her room and an IPOD however bedtimes are early and enforced. Otherwise it all goes. She really does better on atleast 10 hours of sleep. Her grades stay up and she isn't as grouchy..She is allowed to stay up on weekends but during the week it is 8:30 and she is almost 14. I will likely increase it to 9 maybe next year.
its not only the technology but kids in the us are getting way too much homework. im up till 4 in the morning doing homework and my school starts at 7.
woot!!! yay music. I listen to it every night to fall asleep. I find it to be very relaxing and I sleep better when I listen to music. (btw: I am a teen)
I think you should be able to let the kid have a T.V, computer, cell phone, ect. in there room and make sure they turn it off around 30 minutes before they should go to sleep. But that is just my suggestion.
I'm in middle school and I have this problem. I only get about 6 or 7 hours of sleep Saturday-Thursday, I go to sleep at midnight, sometimes later. I have to be at school at 8:15 in the morning. I am tired right now...
I love having all that stuff in my room. I'm 15 and have never had a problem with my comp or tv being in my room before. I just make sure that i go to bed early enough to get enough sleep for the nextday and turn all my gadgets off except for my tv. Which i set a sleep timer on so it turns off by itself.
I don't agree with this, "For starters, she tells parents to take TVs out of teens' bedrooms, enforce turn-off times on PCs and phones—every tech gadget except music players.". Ever heard or teens rebelling? They will find a way to do these things even with the restrictions. Forget about making rules. Just raise your children so they're accustomed to sleeping on time.
haha i wish i had 4-6 hours of sleep a night during school years. With all the crap in my schedule ill be lucky to get 3-4 hours. Sometimes all nighters. :( not so fun but it's college life. and i dont have one of those gadgets other than a computer for hw.
1/2 of the things that are there are true im a teen and I speen almost all night with my PC, but this is only when I don't have school. Other than that I like to go to sleep at 9pm and have a good night sleep before school.
I cant fall asleep before 1 even if i lay down at 9, haha. Over Summer I had become accustomed to staying up late and I cant get rid of it because I only have 2 morning classes a week. So the others I can maintain my schedule with for awhile
I am 19 years old and I am a bit surprised by some of these comments. I guess I am just used to what I've grown up with. I've had a tv in my bedroom since I was about 10. It first was a black and white non-cable tv then when I was 13 I got a 19 inch color that I still use in my bedroom. I also have a lap top (with wireless so yes I use it in bed) and a video Ipod. I think what kids need to learn is self control. They should be able to turn the tv off and the computer off and the ipod and go to bed. I think I'd rather teach my children self control then not letting them have a tv or something.
whoo!!! stay up late..its not that bad i get a's and b's but i only get a few hours of sleep...and im taking three ap classes...and you hafta remember..that most of the time were up late is because we have a sport dont get out till' 5-6 get home eat dinner with family ...then start homework..ima senior...okay only five periods...still have a bunch of hw...
If the teen is tired they will go to bed earlier if not they will stay up later. Its nothing different from an adult staying up on the computer and having to get up to go to work. Im a teen I have a PC, Tv, DVD/VCR, ps2, atari and a phone oh ya a stero, cell phone, a mp3 player and a regular phone. All of which I paid for. I have the tv on and if its loud I turn it off or if i cant sleep due to it i turn it off. Its all due to the teen. SO WHO CARES WHO HAS WHAT IN THERE BEDROOM!
One doesn't have to go to exremems to enforce rules. My children (17 and 14) started out with TVs at age 2 (mostly for cookie monster videos). The rule was and still is no TV on school nights (homework and reading) only. Also, my son has the latest Wii, nintendo, and gamecube...but the rule is the same...not on school nights. On the weekends they can have at it and also during the summer. It is like automatic for them, once Sunday evening rolls around - everything is off, and they have no problem telling their friends. So, we can have "things" and "gadgets" in our homes but still enforce rules. At 17 1/2 my daughter still turns it off on time and if there is something in partuclar coming on she will ask first (if homework is done, which is usually is not, APs and physics) then the answer is no! It's all about how you start off with your kids...but I believe it is never too late. Set boundaries not take away, because what message is that sending to your kids. Your bought all of these things for them - now you are being an indian giver. Set boundaries and enforce them...you are the parent! Start parenting.
I find if i have a rain background music play while i try to sleep i tend to sleep better it playes from my computer but i shut the monitor off and leave that play for at least an hour before hand tv is never turned on sencless to even have it in my room im 17 not compleatly dedicated to school but when i dont get sleep it seems that i run on some saved up backup fuel wich needs to be burned sometimes on weekends going out and running with my friends always helps.
