Are Your Teens Getting Junk Sleep?

I think we all know the kind of sleep you get when you decide to go to bed with a TV blaring. It's not good. But I like the name The Sleep Council in Britain gives to the kind of sleep teens get when they go to sleep watching TV, listening to music, or using other electronic gadgets: "junk sleep."

A poll of 1,000 kids, ages 12 to 16, found that 30 percent go on four to seven hours of sleep a night, far from the recommended eight or nine or more that teens often get when they can. As Reuters reports, nearly all of the teenagers surveyed had a phone, music system, or TV in their bedroom and two-thirds of them had all three. What, no PC, too? A 2005 Pew Internet & American Life project study found that 26 percent of U.S. teens spent time online in their bedrooms, and that's two years ago.

As Helene Emsellem, a sleep physician, told the NPR's Allison Aubrey, "As we have more and more ways to stay connected at night, we've seen an exaggeration of the night-owlism in teenagers." Research shows that teens' internal clocks shift toward much later sleep times, and tech that keeps teens engaged and not relaxed doesn't help—especially when they have to get up early for school.

Check out Emsellem's recommendations to help teens sleep better in the article. (Link below) For starters, she tells parents to take TVs out of teens' bedrooms, enforce turn-off times on PCs and phones—every tech gadget except music players. Ensellem encourages teens to listen to music at night—but tune into a soothing playlist, on low volume, that helps them relax and go to sleep.

If you've got more tips to help kids de-tech at the end of the day and get the sleep they need, please post them below.

Well what do you expect us to after sitting still for 6 freaking hours? Go home and do homework, eat, then go to bed? Come the heck on! We don't want that. We would rather get our homework done, then relax to some Family Guy or a Halo match. You think you all know us, but you don't. So just shut up and worry about how we are going to get out of Iraq, or how come 1/5 of Americans can't locate the United States on a map. I guarantee to you, that isn't the 1/5 that stay up late.

This has nothing to do with the technology it has to do with the parenting. I am 20 now and when I was in highschool I had a computer, tv, house phone and cell phone in my room. And by 11pm everynight except for weekends when I had permission I was in bed going to sleep. Don't blame technology for poor parenting.

read a book, read any book. when iw as at my mom's house i never had a tv in my room, only my dad's. the thing that usually kept me u was a good book, but reading can help to relax from the day's activities and is calming and quiet. by encouraging evening reading, parent and child for those unable or unwilling to read on their own, or solo can help to improve literacy levels and english comprehension.

wow. Considering that I'm a teenager who is currently up at 11 PM surfing the net, this explains a lot. I'll deal with my messed up bio clock in september.

I am a teen, I have 1 computer, 1 tv (which is only good for watching movies), and lots of music. I think that listening to any type of music while I try to sleep is difficult, I'm too concentrated on the music to concentrate on my sleeping. thats just me ofcourse, it may have other effects on other people tho.

sleep is so important. more important than even excercise yet so many kids ignore it, thinking they are are working hard..

D'you think a TV blaring in the other room would be considered a type of "junk sleep"? I've been having trouble convincing my father to turn the TV off, since it bothers me when I'm trying to sleep. I'm one of the oddballs who can't stand having anything on - except a fan - when I'm trying to sleep, let alone a distracting TV. If I were to have some way of convincing him that it really was bad for my health and I wasn't "just being a big baby," my eyes surely would be brighter during the day.

I agree with comment 24. ^__^ TV is NOT A BAD THING! Just be a good smart parent. Keep checking on what they are watching, see what they are doing online, check there phones once in a while, and let them listen to music! That is a very important thing in a teens life. In many different ways. Also... When your kid is doing there homework or studing make sure the TV is off or get them to do it in a different room with no TV or any destracions.

I'm a teenage girl.I have a laptop, a tv, and other electronics in my room. And I make good grades. I stay up really late on the weekends mostly. I like using technology. There's nothing wrong with that either.

I'm 16. I have a TV, stereo, xbox, etc. in my bedroom. I never use them past seven or eight on a weeknight and I still can't fall asleep early enough to get the right amount of sleep. I can turn my light off at eleven, and then lay there awake in the dark for hours until I finally drift off. If you want teenagers to get more sleep, try NOT starting school at eight o'clock in the morning!

We installed a dimmer switch on our teenage daughter's bedroom light. After homework & reading are done, she dims the light to a low level & talks to a friend or 2 on the phone. The low light level signals to her that bed time is near & she VOLUNTARILY hangs up the phone & is in bed by 9:30pm on school nights. Did I mention she is a senior in high school? This has worked like a charm!
