After 10 years on the web, Johnson & Johnson's BabyCenter has shifted into Web 2.0 gear by acquiring Maya's Mom, the Palo Alto-based social networking site for moms.
Maya's Mom founder and CEO Ann Crady said the social networking site will remain a standalone site which can now also be reached via BabyCenter's web site. The acquisition immediately brings social networking capabilities to BabyCenter, which is evolving from a predominantly e-commerce site to more of a media company with lots of content about pregnancy and parenting babies and young children. BabyCenter is the leading site for new and expectant moms. Crady announced the news to Maya's Mom members in this note.
BabyCenter will be able to reach Maya's Moms, and Maya's Mom will have more resources to add features and expand the social network. The amount of the deal is not being disclosed, nor is the number of members Maya's Mom has registered.
"We're not planning to change anything," Crady told me. "We've got a vibrant community of amazing members and we want to keep that as it is." The added resources will help the Maya's Mom team create the tools and space for local parents' groups to use the social network.
