Does a cyberbully live in your house?
Internet researcher Michele Ybarra says one in four teens are cyberbullies, and that 6 percent of them harass or bully others online frequently. I've never thought of myself to be a Pollyanna, but that seems high to me. Maybe that's because other research indicates that online bullies are not casting a wide net for targets. Based on two other surveys, somewhere between 76 percent and 91 percent of teens say they have not been harassed, meaning somewhere between 1 in 4 and 1 in 10 teens are on the receiving end of mean, hurtful comments and actions online.
Ybarra developed a web site designed to help teens and parents deal with online harassment: Cyberbullies411.org. According to info on the web site, cyberbullying is defined as "threats or other offensive behavior sent online to a victim or posted online about the person for others to see. It can take place on social networking sites, or in the form of instant messages and/or emails.
Working through the the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, Ybarra's researchers talked to 1,500 teens. Digging deeper, they found that teens who owned up to cyberbullying have poor relationships with their parents.
I'd love to hear from teens and parents about whether these numbers sound high or right on target. Is cyberbullying prevalent or not happening to you or your friends?

Cyberbullying is fun. If someone is so stupid and flakey as to let comments from a complete and total stranger affect them, then they deserve it. When someone who has never seen you calls you "ugly" and you get upset by it, then there's something wrong with you. When someone who doesn't even know what state you live in (let alone your street address) threatens you and you actually get scared, there's something wrong with you. It's the Internet people! It's not the local country club! There are "mean" people, there's tons of insane pr0n, there are pedophiles, there is illegal commerce!
I agree with the numbers myself. I have never played a game online where I didnt hear someone saying something mean to someone else that day. I also agree it is the internet and it should not matter what people who don't know you says. Its like a kid in china calling americans ----- s if you dont hear it you don't get upset but if you do??? Why does it matter anyway?
who cares? its just random people, who cares about what they think. I mean if someone you know says stuff about you online, they should say it to their face. Im not a cyber bully in any way, but I think its stupid that people think its that big of a deal.
