Slowly and steadily, tech has creeped into Halloween, a holiday historically about pretending to be someone else, gorging on candy, staving off the dark winter that is around the corner.
If you've been looking to add some tech to spook up your home displays this Halloween, here's a roundup of ideas from the web. And I'm not talking those outsized inflatable, lighted displays of ghosts in pumpkins. Anyone can plug them in and call it a Halloween.
Strobe lights -- As Halloween Online Magazine says, strobe lights directed at trees can make them look as if they're moving, or pointed toward Halloween displays can make them extra spooky. Prices range from $20 into the hundreds, depending how spooky you want to get.
Fog machine -- A strobe light directed into fog from a fog machine sets an eerie scene for trick or treaters, but fog all on its own can be creepy enough.
6' Shocking Monster -- You need a lot of seasonal storage to keep this guy around from Halloween from Halloween, though he does collapse. But when he's at work this $200 monster's head, arms, eyes, and mouth move as he talks. His brain and heart glow, and he can be hooked up to a radio or stereo, or you can use a microphone that comes with the prop to be the monster's voice. Chris Null featured a similar animated butler in his 2006 Halloween decoration picks.
Halloween screensavers can dress up your office or home PC and get you in the mood of the day even if you're far from a front door brimming with eager trick-or-treaters.
Pumpkin carving that requires power tools -- Check out this ExtremePumpkins.com site that seeks to reclaim pumpkin carving with alternative pumpkin carving techniques. A puking pumpkin, anyone?
Remote Control Dirty Rat -- Move this around a table at a Halloween party or around the feet of trick or treaters on your front porch and you're sure to elicit some genuine screams.
Love to hear how you put tech to work to turn your house into a spine-chilling stop on the trick-or-treat trail. Scare us below.

Nothing new and tech-worthy in my opinion.

My family doesn't usually spend too much, into tech at least, on Halloween. We do have some old light-up pumpkins though, and my mom has scattered the three around the house. It's not tech related, but we also have some creepy dead vines and a "Skelly Bat" hanging by our door out front. Some other great non-tech ideas are taping black paper rats on the walls of your house. It looks like a bunch of little rat shadows. I did THIS one year for my sister's Halloween birthday - put a cube of dry ice in the punch bowl. It looks so cool to have fogging orange punch! :-) Thanks, and keep up the good work, Dory!
