Hands on with SanDisk's Sansa Clip

SanDisk has a new small MP3 player, the Sansa Clip, and it's tiny but rich in features and sound quality. It comes in 1GB ($40) and 2GB ($60).

The obvious competitor to the 2.17 x 1.25 inch clip-on player is Apple's Shuffle, but though the Shuffle is double the price, $80 for 1GB, the Sansa Clip offers more features.

This small .92-ounce player allows you to choose which songs you play when, as well as opt for a shuffle mode. There's an LCD screen and, yes, an iPod-like scroll wheel and center menu button to allow you to pick playlists and songs. The 1GB comes in black, while the 2GB Clips comes in black, red, hot pink, and ice blue.

I like that it comes with an FM tuner, which I would want in a clip-on music player so I could listen to the radio while exercising or on a train.

The Sansa Clip works with Windows Media Player 10 or 11, easily syncing playlists to the player from your PC. The sound is very nice. It does what you'd want a very portable MP3 player to do, and is easy to figure out how to use within minutes. The screen and FM tuner are nice add-ons that make the Clip a very good tiny MP3 player and an excellent deal.

Update: To answer some reader questions about the Sansa Clip, here are a few more details. Yes, it works with Vista, Windows XP SP2, and Windows Media Player 10 or 11. You can download MP3 or WMA files onto the player. SanDisk says the 1GB Clip can play about 15 hours or 250 MP3 songs and about 30 hours of music and 500 WMA songs. The 2GB plays up to 30 hours and 500 MP3 songs, and 64 hours and 1,000 WMA files.

I'd love to know the a few things about your 'looking at': 1) What O/S are you Running? Did it 'see' everything? (I ask as I have a SanDisk Mp3 Player... and XP Pro -all updates- only 'see's half the Music/Songs -while Win2000 at Work SEES All! 2) Yes, I have asked Tech - No Reply/Support... 3) Squarish Selector on front No longer works in 'up' direction. 4) Software is NOT intuitive. 5) Manual is pretty 'thin' almost non-existant -many questions 6) No Repy/Support on 'How-to' or Can I? Quetsions... 7) Were there 'Cons' ? Or, is this Product "Perfect"? 8) Did you get 'Free' for Reviewing?

All good questions, hwy101y. First, I do not keep any products I review. I test them and ship them back. I run XP, and using Windows Media Player, my PC recognizes the Sansa Clip player immediately. It does not list the songs that are already on the player, but it makes it simple to create a playlist and sync it to the player. I was not as happy with the Sansa Shaker, a SanDisk MP3 player designed for kids, because of the sound quality and because it would cut off songs before they were finished. But after using the Clip for a few days, I do find it to be a very capable player. As for cons, the screen is small, so for older eyes it may seem pointless to have a screen at all. But I find it very clear and easy to read.

I have been unable to find the 2GB version at any store. Anyone know when this will be available? I've emailed SanDisk, since it was supposed to be released last month, but they have not responded.

I've seen the 2GB Sansa Clip available on BestBuy.com. Amazon has the 1GB Clip available as of Oct. 31.

just bought the sansa clip( Best Buy 59.99) and found that if your computer isnt up to date youll have trouble. first you need at least media player 10 or better( xp automatically loads 11, 2hrs40min on 56k) then you must have service pack 2 winxp ver. or MP11 wont finnish loading. then you can start with your computer recognizing your new hardware and loading music. after that you should have a kool alternative to the more evpensive ipod line
