One Laptop Per Child, the nonprofit organization intent on providing children in the developing world access to computers and the Internet, has extended the two-week offer to Americans and Canadians to "Give One Get One" through December.

So instead of ending today, the opportunity to pay US$399 for two XO laptops—one to donate to a child in countries such as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Haiti, Mongolia, and Rwanda, and one to keep—will continue through Dec. 31.

Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child, said many people have asked for more time to participate and to organize XO giving programs locally and nationally. So far donations to the Give One Get One program have averaged US$2 million a day.

"During this extended period we will solicit input and transition to a program of giving only at the beginning of 2008," Negroponte said. "We want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to act upon the giving spirit of the holiday season."

The XO laptops are very sturdy, open source, and energy efficient. A mesh network allows the computers to connect to the Internet through each other.

Donors to the program can take a $200 charitable tax deduction and get access to one year of free T-Mobile HotSpot Wi-Fi service in 8,500 locations throughout the United States.
