Slingbox Shifts TV Anywhere, Anytime

In my TV-on-PC post, a reader suggested checking out the Slingbox, a device that looks like an oversized chunky chocolate bar in a foil wrapper. It hooks up to your TV, allowing you to access live TV programming and recorded shows on digital video recorders on a Windows PC or mobile device with broadband Internet access.

The cost is about $200 to $250 for the Slingbox, though this review in Time magazine said a $100 Slinglink was needed to make the hookup go more smoothly. But once you've laid out the $300 plus, there are no monthly service charges. You're already paying those for your cable or satellite and DVR services.

It's definitely cool technology—for the serious I-want-my-TV-now crowd. With the finale to American Idol hours away, I'm thinking my family catches plenty of TV in real time and through the DVR. I'm not sure any of us needs another vehicle for TV watching.

But if you're intrigued, check out these reviews on PBS.org, Time magazine and PC Magazine. There are some others here on Yahoo! Tech.

Is the Slingbox a must-add to your video cabinet? If anyone has already hooked one up, let us know how it's changed your TV-viewing habits.

Bought the Slingbox at Best Buy a while back for $200 on sale. I have installed the client on 5 different pc's at home and the office and can honestly say this gizmo is terrific. It controls my Dish Network tuner without a hitch. Works great over a wireless connection too. Makes it easy to keep up with news, sports, etc. from your home stations no matter where in the world you are. Do ya need one? nah, but don't let that stop you! The wow factor was enough for me!
