Blogs Redefine Language

When I tell people what I do, I sometimes get questions from the over-35 set about blogs—what exactly are they and who has time to read them?

You, I tell them. You're probably reading a few every day. (Hopefully, you've bookmarked your four trusty Yahoo! Tech advisers.) Seriously, I remember listening to some fellow journalists lament that they don't have the time to comb the Web for blogs. Yet most had been reading Romenesko, Jim Romenesko's daily blog about the news biz on the Poynter Institute Web site, for years.

For those bemused by the blogosphere, the burgeoning lexicon of new words arising from it probably doesn't help. To take some of the mystery out of blogs, here's a primer on blogging terms on Quick Online Tips.

The Giant Blogging Terms Glossary starts with blog, short for web log. But it moves onto vlogging (video blogging) and blogrolls (list of blog links in a blog's sidebar.)

Two of my favorites:

blogopotamus—a long, long blog post

blurker—a blog reader not posting comments, just lurking quietly around

Check out the whole list, then check back because blogs are adding new words to the language all the time.

I have a blog online, but I chose not to have anyone comment on my logs for fear of getting my feelings hurt by what they might say -- however few comments I may get that might be delightful and make my day. But, my question to you today is, "Do you really want people to post a comment?" Or, "Do you have the time to read all the comments that you receive?" I'm going to check out the blog language that you're writing about today. Maybe I could learn a thing or two.

I went to the webpage you suggested to learn the blogger's glossary. Well, I for one don't like it. I'd much prefer to stick to the King's language. To me, it makes reading more difficult and uninteresting and unintelligible. Thank you for giving me the option of posting a comment. All the best, Fay C
