Another Option: Prepaid Cell Phone Plans

When I signed up for a new two-year cell phone contract with Verizon, we opted against a family plan and adding another phone for another $30 a month. It's not that we don't want the extra phone for our 13-year-old, who is starting to venture out more and could use a phone to call home for a ride, or in case of emergency. But we're not in a rush to add another $30 to our phone bill if the extra phone doesn't get daily use.

I'm checking out another option for our teen: Pre-paid cell phone plans. These plans, which basically require you to pay for minutes up front but do not demand you sign a one- or two-year contract, have gotten better lately. (For an overview, check out this Cnet guide.) But if you're not careful, you could end up paying more than you would with a family plan.

That's the way Verizon Wireless has its pre-paid plans configured—costing upwards of $30 to $70 a month, plus the cost of a phone. When you upgrade to a family plan when renewing a two-year contract you can count on getting a free phone.

But other major carriers offer pre-paid calling plans starting at lower fees:

T-Mobile ToGo: Offers plans starting at 10 cents a minute for prepaid totals, such as $10 for 30 minutes for 30 days and $25 for 130 minutes for 90 days.

Cingular GoPhone: Options include 10 cents a minute plus $1 access fee for every day you use the phone, and a 25-cents-per-minute plan with no access fees.

I'm up for trying one of these plans with no long-term commitment and see how much we use the extra phone. Has anyone tried a pre-paid plan for a teenager in your house, or for yourself? Let us know how it worked out.

If your usage is low and you want spend less. T-mobile is the way to go. Once you spend $100 on minutes you become "gold", which means expiration on your minutes increases to a year. Any time you add minutes, the expiration on your entire minute balance gets extended for another year. This means you can keep the phone active for as little as $10 a year. This is the perfect emergency phone; for grandparents or for young kids to keep in their backpack.

I've been with revol about 2 years an cant beat the plan. $37/ $47 ($54) for unlimited minutes plus texting and roaming. I dont travel much, but surprise myself by the amount of minutes i talk at the end of each month. The only problem I have with them is their lack of professionalism and lack of reception when i do travel out of state. If youre trying to stay within a budget (especially with the food and gas prices) this plan may work. However, you may have to take out a 2nd morgage to purchase one of their upscale phones. It's definitely not free!!

Frankly, I think it is horrible they charge so much for pre-paid minutes--I would think because they had their money in advance, no billing or potential collections problems, that they would be cheaper than having a regular cell phone. Plus, the minutes expire too soon. Have never understood why they gouge those using pre-paid phones as many I know use them or would use them a lot if the prices were cheaper. They don't want monthly bills, but access to a cell phone on a regular basis. I would buy one for emergencies and casual use, as I have a land line as my basic phone, but they are just too expensive and the minutes expire too quickly! Note also I don't have a long distance company on my land line, I use a pre-paid calling card and renew it as needed, several times a year, and $20 gets me about 1200 minutes!

I used to have a commitment with Cingular/ATT for several years and was fairly happy. Later I switched to Verizon because they had the PDA phone I wanted. It was terrible and I discontinued service and screwed my credit. Recently I tried ATT GO Phone and found that $1.0/day + 0.10/minute + 0.20/text and only God knows how much for Internet access, was just way too expensive for me. It does have free ATT to ATT calls and free nights and weekends, but it ended up costing me over 100.00 a month. Now I am with Metro PCS and I think they are quite great. 50.00/month for unltd. minutes, unltd. long distance, unltd. texts, unltd. internet, unltd. navigation, and the firtst month is free when you purchase a phone. I got the Samsung Messager 450 phone for 169.99 and got my first month for free. It has a full slide out keyboard and lots of cool features. I am overall very happy with the phone and the service. The only things lacking that I have found is that none of their phones seem to be really decent PDAs. Their internet is kind of lacking. None of their phones seem to have full internet, just web clipping and none of their phones seem to have full video capability. I was hoping to get a phone that could download and watch movies and internet clips. My phone does have quite a cool music player but I have a hard time downloading directly from the phones internet access. Thus far, I have had to sync up to my laptop to put songs on my phone. I really want a phone that can kind of function as my PC when I am on the go.

Hey! What do you all think of BOOST Mobile??? I was with PacBell/Cingular/AT&T for nine and one-half years, and been with BOOST now a little over a year. I've only had TWO dropped calls...and I don't go out of southern California, so I don't need to worry about roaming. UNLIMITED talk, text, pictures AND internet for $50 a month. Let me know what you think!!!

The Tmobile Family Flex-Pay is a great plan. I have two phones - 700 mins shared - Fav5 (5 on each phone) and unlilimtred text on both phones for under $130.00 per month with no contract. The only down fall is you have to pay full price for the phones. When my daughter's $200.00 phone broke last month I went to Walmart and brought one of the boxed Tmobile prepaid phones for $50.00 and popped in the SIIM I saved 150.00 and the phone has more featues than the one I paid $200.00 in the Tmobile store.
