Three New Ways to Sling TV Anywhere

Slingbox, the brick-like, set-top box that sends TV programs from home TVs across the Internet to nearby and farflung computers, has some offspring to take TV anywhere to the next level.

Slingmedia introduced three new versions this week to better fit different TV setups in homes.

• The Tuner: An analog tuner for basic cable TV. ($180) It's smaller than the original Slingbox Classic, and comes with a built-in TV tuner, an Ethernet port and two coaxial inputs.

AV: No TV tuner, but it connects to a system with DirecTV, Dish Network, a TiVo, or other DVR box. ($180)

Pro: A tuner for homes with more complex home systems. It connects to and can control multiple video devices, and it has a high-definition port for HDTV boxes. ($250) But an extra $50 HD connector, available this fall, will be needed to run HD signals through the Pro.

So why the different versions? As Zatz reports, it's Slingmedia's attempt to better match the different ways people watch TV with improved hardware that offers a higher resolution (up to 640x480) at faster speeds.

The multiple options may be confusing if you've heard of Slingbox but haven't been sure it will work for your setup. Check out what's needed for each Slingbox version on this tech specifications page.

If you've been on the fence and want to give Slingbox a try, Zatz wisely says to watch for more prices drops (it already has dropped a bit) on the original Slingbox as the holidays approach.

And if you've been using Slingbox, let us know how it's working and how it's made a difference in your viewing lives. If you'll be upgrading or signing on to TV anywhere with any of these new models, let us know that, too.

Wow, you guys just dont get it, Imagine sitting in a hotel room, working in Tel Aviv, Isreal and queing up something you just recorded on you PVR at your home and playing it. through the World Wide Web on your laptop is Isreal. Sure, there are other methods But SlingBox is by far the best and cheapest way so far. The video is divx 1st generation quality. Which is a pretty impressive invention in my book.

So, I'll be able to watch programs on my laptop that I recorded via my cable DVR anywhere I choose? Not just on the 1 TV that my DVR box resides? For no extra monthly charge to the cable company? Anywhere for me is: while I'm waiting at the airport or in my basement while exercising. Slingbox will save me $ (only pay for 1 TV hookup to digital/DVR box) and I'll no longer have to choose between watching a DVR-recorded program in the family room or exercising in the basement--I can do both simultaneously! Cool!

I've been quite pleased with my Slingbox AV hooked up to my tivo, was watching the Soprano's in the Hong Kong airport last week. Quite slick being able to watch the shows and control your tv from halfway around the world especially when staying in hotels with HBO movies from 8 years ago...

I use the Slingbox myself to get programing from the east coast sent out via the web to the west coast. It allows me to be able to watch the New England Patriots games that are not televised on the west coast.

We've had Slingbox AV for a year now. Really comes in handy. Best example to date. Floyd Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya....only on Pay Per View! Oh NO! I was dragged to a wedding we had planned months in advance. What to do? I ordered the fight on my TV at home. Once I got to the wedding, I used the 3G cell phone to tap into my Slingbox at home. Tuned it to the PPV channel and wah-la. Watched the fight at the dinner table during the reception! Awesome!! I love it!

You have to look at it from a needs standpoint. If you never travel or don't have the need to watch TV from anywhere but your home, it really has little advantage. The advantage comes when you live or travel abroad and want to be able to watch your own broadcasts. My brother lives in South Korea while I live in Phoenix, AZ. He is able to download some shows but nothing usually live. He is a sports fan and likes to watch the usual sports shows. Also, South Korea is 16 hours ahead of AZ so he would be watching many of these things early in the morning or middle of the night. He decide to get this product, uses my cable on a box set aside just for this with DVR and records and watches all of the programs he wants at the time he prefers. It has worked out great for him and his family to be able to watch US programming from his home in South Korea.

I have Slingbox and I love it. I was in Japan recently and was able to watch my local morning news (Pacific Time) and then go to bed (Japan time). I have it hooked up to my Tivo so I can access my Tivo anytime, anywhere as long as I have my laptop and an internet connection. I recently got a Motorola Q and now I can Slingbox virtually anywhere, as long as I can get a signal on my phone. Slingbox rules!

I tried a sling box and did not like it. I have three Sony Media Computers with the built in tunners on my home network and I use a free program from ORB.Com (ORB 2.0). If you have any brand of media center computer it allows you to watch the cable at your home from anywhere you can acess the internet. You can also operate your digital recorder and acess any photo, sound, or work files on your media ready computer. Hook up is simple Just connect your media computer to your Cable and down load the orb 2.0 software for free. Then when you want to watch just go to Orb.com and sign in. It works so well I took my Sling Box Back!!!
