Tracking Santa on the Web

We watched Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story recently, and it was fun to hear my kids laugh throughout one of my favorite holiday movies, a well-told story by a radio legend. Watching Ralphie listening to the radio stirred vague memories of tuning into Jean Shepherd's radio show, with my family riveted to his every word. But it also reminded me of the only time as a kid I remember being riveted to the radio instead of the TV: Christmas Eve, listening to the NORAD sightings of Santa on his marathon gift run.

NORAD's Santa tracking operation moved onto the web in 1998, and kids and parents can go to the NORAD Tracks Santa web site and track the big fella's movements in six languages. The story goes that NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) got involved in Santa's movements after its predecessor, CONAD (Continental Air Defense Command), got calls about Santa's whereabouts after Sears & Roebuck mistakenly misprinted a Santa hotline telephone number in newspaper ads in 1955. The commander who answered the first child's call gave out the requested info, and a tradition was born. When CONAD became NORAD, the bi-national air defense command for the United States and Canada in 1958, it took over the duties of tracking Santa's around-the-world flight.

Kids can check out the Santa webcams that "capture images of Santa and the Reindeer as they make their journey around the world."

My kids have also liked the Santa at Claus.com web site, where they can check if they've been naughty or nice. But they have grown suspicious in the past when some of the same phrases popped up after they put in different friends' names. (As always, this is a good teachable moment to tell young kids not to put in full names or other personal information if they send an e-mail to Santa.)

Got any other favorite Santa web sites to incite even more pre-holiday frenzy in your home? Share!

To all of the cruel people who are commenting that Santa is dead or fake...why? What do you have against inocent children who are so excited for santa to come? The children whose face lights up when they are able to track a figure that has put a smile on their face! I guess you had parents who held a grudge against the jolly guy. Or you love to see kids cry!! You must be the type who loves to crush ones imagination and dreams. If you have a problem with the NORAD then write them, but don't display your pettiness where little kids visit in happiness.

LoL. Everyone chill out. I would love to see proof that Santa is "real" Santa is just a Acronism for Satan. Get it right. Satan is made of lies and deceipt. Just like Santa. You're all wasting your lives on this Santa business. Lucky for me I was blessed with parents that did not fill my head with lies. Unfortunately that didn't happen to you. Maybe if you would concentrate on other things rather than Santa you would realize the facts. Realize the degrees in the North Pole and The fact that I would love to see something other that an Engine/Man powered Object to fly. The proof is that Christmas is not for "Santa" It is for Christ Jesus. Christ-mas. This holiday is not for presents this is the day we celebrate the Christ Jesus's Birthday. If you want proof. Read between the Scars on Jesus's Back from which he got whipped with the Nine Tailed. (Bursty)

Shame on you, lying to and making fools of little children just for the amusement of parents. As a child, I was deeply hurt when I finally found out from a cousin that Santa wasn't real and my parents had been telling elaborate stories to me. My children are adults now and very happy that their parents never perpetrated the Santa lie and all the other silly and harmful nonesense that goes with it on them!

It's not if he is real or not! It is that most kids of young age do believe in him and do get very happy to track him. Kids fancy this time of year and though Christmas is about Jesus, if you want to go into asking people to get facts straight then post how everyone celebrates the birth of Christ at the wrong time as it was found that he was actually born c@#$% to spring due to the bilble quotes that the sheppard are in the meadow..and most likley this wouldn't happen in the cold of December. Now that said, why do you and others feel that it is their responsibilty to crush a childs imagination and force your parenting style on these children who click on this link only to find people like your kind who only care about their beliefs and not what a child wants..which is not to come here and see slandering of a figure they are excited about. I'm sure parents focus and dedicate this time to Christ, but what does it hurt(not you!!) if they add to a childs imagination.

Santa is a fun tradition for the little ones, a time when they are innocents in regards to things like 9/11. I feel that small things like this should not be taken away from them, because with time and maturity they can find out for themselves who and where the old man and rudolf are at.Let them have this fantasy world a little longer.

I believe in Jesus Christ and the Christmas Spirit, and each Christmas I remind my two young daughters of the birth of Jesus Christ. They know the true reason for the season, and Santa Claus is just a BONUS for them!! Perhaps some of you that are so bitter, should take a look c@#$% at why you feel you need to leave such horrible messages about something that is merely created to bring happiness and joy to children. What is wrong with that? I NEVER think twice about the tradition and fallacy of Santa Claus when I look at my children's faces on Christmas morning after they find Santa's gifts under the Christmas tree!! And frankly, I can say I have never blamed anything in my life that has went wrong on the Santa Claus fallacy from my childhood. Let the children enjoy their childhood--it goes by too quickly on its own. After all, I imagine most of you waited with excitement for Santa to come down the Chimney:-) And if he never came to your house, perhaps that is one of the reasons why you are such a bitter person today. Just a thought?!?!?
